Hershey, before receiving treatment at the ASPCA Animal Hospital

Today the ASPCA arrested Queens resident Grimilda Amil for allegedly neglecting and starving her three-year-old male Yorkshire terrier, who has been recovering under our care for nearly two months.

Amil brought her Yorkie, Hershey, to an ASPCA Mobile/Spay Neuter Clinic on June 27. Alarmed at Hershey’s condition, Clinic staff called our Humane Law Enforcement Agents, who quickly responded.

Amil relinquished ownership of Hershey to the ASPCA, and Agents transported the tiny dog to the ASPCA Animal Hospital.

There, veterinarians determined Hershey— whom they found to be emaciated, anemic and suffering from pressure sores—had been starved. At that time, Hershey weighed just 5.2 pounds. Today he weighs in at 10.1 pounds, a 94% increase!

Hershey is completing his recovery in a caring ASPCA foster home. When he’s ready, he’ll be made available for adoption.

Amil, 55, was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. She is due in Queens Criminal Court on October 4.

If you suspect you’ve witnessed animal cruelty, please don’t hesitate to report it.

Thank you for a reasoned comment that doesn't demonize a stranger. No one ever seems to 'walk a mile in their shoes' anymore.

There has to be more to this story that needs addressing. I am not defending this person by any means. The perplexing detail is that she was cognizant enough to bring the little guy to the Mobile Unit. This is terribly sad for both animal and human. I hope the time is taken to understand this particular situation. Animals are the victims of human conduct. "Teach only love, for that is all there is."

I will never understand the mindset of people who do such cruel things. Why get a dog when you are only going to starve it to death? I would like to see our lawmakers consider this a very heinous crime and those who commit these crimes should pay the ultimate price.

Do to her what she did to the baby

How about convict her and then let me do the punishment? I will come to Queens on my dime and dole out what I think is appropriate. Sound good to everyone?

Pat

I agree. She should get no food or water either. Make it a felony

Linda

I cannot believe that woman. I mean really how much can that dog eat for God's sake. I hope she goes to jail so everyone will see that if you abuse an animal you pay. I hope she doesn't get a slap on the wrist. I am tired of these people.

THERE SHOULD B A NATIONAL 'BANK' OF INFO THAT THESE PEOPLE SHOULD NEVER B ALLOWED TO GET AN ANIMAL AGAIN. A NATIONAL REGISTRY. THEY DO IT FOR HUMANS, WE NEED IT MORE FOR ANIMALS SINCE THEY CAN'T SPEAK UP

Wouldn't it be a kick in the rear for this lady that starved the sweet yorkie if all dogs could own her and treat her like she did the tiny yorkie by starving her!!!

All of us can agree the kind of people who do this are the lowest form of life there is. We should certainly air our fustration on sites like this. BUT ALL OF US SHOULD CALL AND WRITE OUR SENATORS AND CONGRESSMAN AND DEMAND STRICT PUNISHMENT FOR ANIMAL ABUSE. I AM AWARE ALL CAPITAL LETTERS LIKE THIS IS SCREEMING AND THATS WHAT I AM DOING. CALL YOU ELECTED OFFICIALS AND DEMAND THEY TAKE ACTION TO STOP ANIMAL ABUSE
