Hershey, before receiving treatment at the ASPCA Animal Hospital

Today the ASPCA arrested Queens resident Grimilda Amil for allegedly neglecting and starving her three-year-old male Yorkshire terrier, who has been recovering under our care for nearly two months.

Amil brought her Yorkie, Hershey, to an ASPCA Mobile/Spay Neuter Clinic on June 27. Alarmed at Hershey’s condition, Clinic staff called our Humane Law Enforcement Agents, who quickly responded.

Amil relinquished ownership of Hershey to the ASPCA, and Agents transported the tiny dog to the ASPCA Animal Hospital.

There, veterinarians determined Hershey— whom they found to be emaciated, anemic and suffering from pressure sores—had been starved. At that time, Hershey weighed just 5.2 pounds. Today he weighs in at 10.1 pounds, a 94% increase!

Hershey is completing his recovery in a caring ASPCA foster home. When he’s ready, he’ll be made available for adoption.

Amil, 55, was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. She is due in Queens Criminal Court on October 4.

If you suspect you’ve witnessed animal cruelty, please don’t hesitate to report it.

I hope he's put up for adoption soon! I would love to have him. I already have one and I love him dearly!

Lori Groshens

They should make her go hungry for awhile.I have a yorkie and would never do that to him.

Queens resident Grimilda Amil - she shouldn't be too hard to find!
It is at the point where we citiznes have to start taking matters in our own hands. The simple solution to all this crap is - to put a moratorium on breeding - tens years - or jail time. The stray homeless population will decrease so fast. Too hard to enforce and regulate you say? COP OUT - then we see more of this crap - we need to elect officials that will stand up for animals.

I would like to take people like that and see them put away for a long time. Being cruel to animals is terrible. I would love to adopt a dog like this and show him or her the love that they didnot get.

Michelle Martin

Despicable woman. I hope she is hit with the full force of the law - she should be made to pay a hefty fine, get a prison sentence and be banned from keeping animals for life.

Examples need to be set to show these people that if they mistreat an animal they will be prosecuted to the maximum.

I cannot even comprehend doing anything abusive to any animal. But i sure can comprehend and have no problem carrying it out to the people who do. And I'm not a violent person, but let me catch someone in the act! I have a yorkie, rescued, and she's the best thing ever. But so is our cocker. :) and they love each other too. nothing better than waking up in a puppy pile with kisses and coming home to it too. I just don't understand those people. They should all suffer the same as the animals they abused did. period, end of story, no re-dos.....

Christine Kraeger

The owner should be starved like that poor dog was. How can anyone be so cruel!

Celeste

I am more than willing and able to provide a safe and loving home for this adorable yorkie. I would
I've and cherish him

Brenda L Thomas

Has anyone come forward to adopt this puppy? If not, I would like to find out how I can adopt it.

Ariane

What a beautiful dog. People who are cruel to animals deserved to be punished in the same way that they would had they mistreated a human.
