Hershey, before receiving treatment at the ASPCA Animal Hospital

Today the ASPCA arrested Queens resident Grimilda Amil for allegedly neglecting and starving her three-year-old male Yorkshire terrier, who has been recovering under our care for nearly two months.

Amil brought her Yorkie, Hershey, to an ASPCA Mobile/Spay Neuter Clinic on June 27. Alarmed at Hershey’s condition, Clinic staff called our Humane Law Enforcement Agents, who quickly responded.

Amil relinquished ownership of Hershey to the ASPCA, and Agents transported the tiny dog to the ASPCA Animal Hospital.

There, veterinarians determined Hershey— whom they found to be emaciated, anemic and suffering from pressure sores—had been starved. At that time, Hershey weighed just 5.2 pounds. Today he weighs in at 10.1 pounds, a 94% increase!

Hershey is completing his recovery in a caring ASPCA foster home. When he’s ready, he’ll be made available for adoption.

Amil, 55, was charged with one count of misdemeanor animal cruelty. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail and/or a $1,000 fine. She is due in Queens Criminal Court on October 4.

If you suspect you’ve witnessed animal cruelty, please don’t hesitate to report it.

I feel terrible for Hershey too. My husband is an animal cruelity law enforcement officer in out county. He is extremely busy. One of the reasons is he believes in teaching the owners how to take care of their pets! And 9 times out of 10, it works! The times that it doesn't, he finds foster homes to care for them until they ready for adoption. I Hershey's owners defense, she did take him to the vets to start with. So.there has to be more to the story than what we already know. I'm glad he is doing so well.

This is why impulse buying of animals should be outlawed. In my opinion, no one should be able to buy so much as a goldfish on impulse. Anyone who desires a pet should have to endure a 7-10 day waiting period before getting approval to get a pet. This needs to include breeders, pet shops, etc. That's why shelters have the right idea...background checks, home checks, etc. I know retail stores would not like this, but if a law was in place, this yorkie never would have gone through such torture. The woman involved in this case never would have passed the background check!

People who abuse animals should never, ever be able to adopt an animal again! Furthermore we NEED to enforce heavier fines on animal cruelty. This has stop! Breaks my heart every time I read about an animal being abused.

I agree with the others about punishing her! The laws need to be changed so that these scum will get serious jail time instead of what amounts to a slap on the wrist. I'm SO glad Hershey is fine now and you just know people will be fighting over him. Wish I could have a dog where I live, as I would put in my bid right now! What a great ending to what could have been a horrible tragedy.

I just dont understand why this is a misdemeanor charge!!!! she`ll just get a slap on the wrist & do it over again. We need to make examples out of these ppl that this behavior is UNACCEPTABLE!!! This lady should be criminally charged because she willingly abused this poor animal! I just don`t get it !! WHEN IS ENOUGH ENOUGH!!!!!!!!!! HOW MANY MORE POOR ANIMALS NEED TO SUFFER ?????

I am sure she had no problem with her weight. Maybe she should be treated like that poor little dog. Put her in a cell and deny her food. I hipe he finds a loving home soon and never has to suffer again. If the people who mistreat animals were more severly punished they might think twice about how they treat their animals.

Good riddance to bad rubbish! Hope they send her to jail for more than a year though!

VOTE FOR HERSHEY FOUND ONLINE TODAY AUGUST 22 2012 ASPCA site. The owner relinquished ownership of Hershey to ASPCA after she brought the 3 year old Yorkie to Mobile/Spay Neuter Clinic in Queens, NY on June 27 totally emaciated -- he regained weight over 2 months - currently up to 10 lbs. His weight doubled in two months. The owner's name sounds like a witch too (Grimilda). She goes to Court on my birthday. Oct 4th. Good riddance to Grimilda. You should never own a dog -- or any pet for that matter -- pets are God's children too you know. I couldn't have children and I have two little dogs, Morgan and Garcia.

Amil. You starved your yorkie Hershey. For what? I can't believe you were only fined. I hope you rot and someone keeps food from you and let's see how you feel. This is a shameful situation ASPCA. We need to do more people. Let's stand up and get these idiots who abuse animals put in jail.
