Emergency! ASPCA Vets Save Starving Pooch
Sometimes the big city can be tough on sensitive souls, and Nala, a tan pit bull with a sweet disposition, is no exception. Earlier this year, the two-year-old dog—emaciated and weak from prolonged starvation—was admitted to the ASPCA’s Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York City for severe anemia and digestive distress. Veterinarians immediately performed extensive blood work and reintroduced solid foods to Nala’s diet. But subsequent radiographs revealed something heartbreaking and life-threatening: Nala’s nearly empty stomach was host to two metal buckles—the sizeable end parts of a collar.“It’s not uncommon for dogs who are severely anemic to seek out sources of iron, like metal objects,” says Dr. Louise Murray, a board-certified specialist in internal medicine and the ASPCA’s Director of Medicine. “Nala was likely driven to eat her own collar in an effort to survive.”
Worried that Nala was too weak for surgery, Murray opted instead for an endoscopy, a less invasive approach to removing the buckles. After Nala was stabilized in the hospital’s intensive care unit, Murray and Dr. Cara Lane performed the hour-long procedure. They passed an endoscope (fiber-optic technology attached to a tiny camera) through the dog’s mouth, down the esophagus and into the GI tract, and visualized the foreign objects on a computer monitor. With the rapt attention of a dozen hospital staffers, Murray used a long, grabbing instrument to retrieve the pieces of metal, one at a time. The vets’ efforts were an unqualified success, and Nala was saved from risky surgery and further complications.
This summer, after a much-needed period of rest and recovery, Nala, whose name means “gift” in Swahili, is now available for adoption at the ASPCA. With a survivor’s spirit, this special lady awaits the unconditional love and affection she richly deserves.

This makes all that love animals so very sad. I also wonder what the outcome of the dalmation was in the movie recently. Perdita?
Please update on her.
I just do not understand why people do the things they do to animals. Just a few weeks ago my mom and I were on our way to take my dog Toby to the pet park when I saw a stray dog I told my mom to pull into the gas station so I could get the dog before it got hit. I then got her and we took her to the humane society But I couldn't leave her there so I filled out a finders paper and I told them that I would keep her till the owner came looking for her. Well I took her to my house and I had her for about one hour before the owner called me and I went and met them and gave them back their dog. I think of my animals as my kids. I support the ASPCA 100% I wish we could Stop all animals from being hurt because REMEMBER THEY HAVE FEELINGS TOO JUST LIKE YOU AND ME.
I, too, would like to know the status of Perdita. Has she been adopted?
that is unbelieveable who would ever do that to a poor inocent animal they desevre to go to jail and they need to be sentenced for life an animal is exactly like a flower it needs tlc tender love and care it needs water air and food this is so oviouse that this person is so rude and can stooped down to a level that is unexceptable i love animals and i care fo everyones pets this is wroung and im appoled
i dont understand why people do that. its like they have no heart.
PLEASE let us know if Perdita is well, and if she has been adopted. Her story really touched my heart, and I can't stop thinking about her.
catsanddolls
the real tragedy is the children that are treated equally as poor as these animals
It is so sad, I don't know how any one can just leave a helpless animal to sterve to death or just abondon them.and the sad part of it all is that we are the humans and they are just animals? If you ask me we act like animals.
animal lover and sad.
That is so sad. Hopfully someone one will adopt Nala. You know, people should stop horse slaughter, but start slaughtering heartless people. This is the same story as Perdita. I cried when I saw the video.
Hi, just wanted to let those of you who asked about Perdita know that she has been adopted into a loving forever home.
Thank you ASPCA for letting us know that she is well and loved!! Now I can sleep at night!
I'm glad to say I will never understand people who treat their pets like this. I love my babies and have gladly sacrificed myself at times to make sure they are properly fed. We chose to bring these wonderful creatures into our lives, and that is a commitment. People who suddenly decide they are no longer convenience by caring for a pet is worse than any monster I can imagine.
I used to call horrible people animals, but I no longer do that, as it would be an insult to animals.

Fond Greetings and Salutations:
"Starving Pooch" Yes indeed we have seen a few of these similar stories and incidents in "Public Housing" wherein the Dog Owners use they're k-9's as persudo-attack guard dogs.....and it show s in the "thugs" attitudes at the door, and in the public area's!!!!
Its hard to even think clearly sometimes when an domestic dog ISNT SOCIALIZED....and IS
rather taught by the D-U-M-B owner, to intimidate and be uncordial and hostile to neighbors.....EVEN if the skinny puppys ribs are showing....when a dog has been taught FEAR, and how to be a bully, and be unkind or polite....
besides putting a muzzel on it.....what else can we as a society moreso give in the spirit of hospitality....to an abused dog.
When ever i happen to visit this person he puts his dog in the Bathroom of his...in order for our
"safety"....cause....
"Dat Dawg will tear yah appart man!!!"
So does putting it away from aspca members eyes......means he cannot change the truth of the matter at hand.
The dawg is skinny!!!!
The dawg is a socially inept and mentally abused by its owner.
But i guesse thats the image of the lifestyle of playing with fire!!!
There are 600 people living in my apt Building units.....and that DAWG.....or rather
THAT DOG is the only one whom behaves like that to me.
Why do people get dogs just as badge of toughness.

there are very bad people today.i love animals and want to adopt any of these to give a good home! u can help!
thank you aspca for letting us no hw she is
I work with the divine. Yes this is hard to understand. I use this time to pray. I ask the Angels every time I see these to please wrap these beautiful animals in their divine light and help them heal. I spend my time praying they are placed in a loving home. I also ask the Angels to help the people who commit these ruthless acts. I love giving to this organization and my goal is to give even more in the future. These people are Angels themselves. God Bless all who help!
AMEN to the Angels comment. I believe that God sent us these creatures so that they can serve as examples to US. Ever seen a moma dog adopt other species? Oh dear God, How I could go on. I LOVE mine. The two cats I'm currently blessed with and my rescue Corgi/Beagle mix. I give to the ASPCA and pray all the time for all the animals in the world. I know they all have a high place in heaven. And for the abusers, I can't deal with it either. I give it the God of my understanding. I believe that he is preparing a very special place in hell for all of the animal abusers. I let it go from that point on.
thats absolouley absurd how could someone do that to an animal not even how could someone do something like that period! To show my appreciation i did a fundraiser i made a lot of lemonade braclets and sold calenders for money to donate to the ASPCA. And surprisingly .....im a 10 year old girl!!!
This makes me sick and very angry and sad how anyone can do horrible things to helpless, DEFENSELESS animals... I contribute each month but which I could to more... anyone that does things like this should be punished and tortured, that's all I can say. I love animals ...
