From the ASPCA Adoption Center Files: Up Close and Personal with Gibbons

Part three in our ongoing series in celebration of Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month.

When we enter the kitty habitat that Gibbons shares with other cats, we spot him by the window, squinting his eyes and licking his fur. He looks so peaceful and distinguished there, soaking in the sunlight, that we almost hate to disturb him.

ASPCA: Hey there, old man! Enjoying a little sun, are ya?

Gibbons looks at us and lowers his head in disapproval.

GIBBONS: Well, I never. In my day, if a kitten talked to his elder that way, he’d find his tail sticking out of his head! Such insolence, such impudence, such—

ASPCA: Aw, shucks, Mr. G, we didn’t mean to offend you. We apologize. Can we start over? We think you look great for your age.

GIBBONS: That’s better. You have my permission to proceed with the interview. Now, then, how can I be of service?

ASPCA: Let’s talk about you. How do you like living here with other cats?

GIBBONS: Oh, I like other cats just fine. It’s certain people that I find questionable. Although I have known to fancy a kind-hearted lady once or twice.

ASPCA: Does that mean you don’t want to get adopted?

GIBBONS: Heavens, where did you get an idea like that? But I won’t live with any old sod. When the right human comes along, I’ll know.

ASPCA: What do you imagine that person will be like?

GIBBONS: Sensitive. Intelligent. Someone who has had a cat before and won’t make amateur mistakes. I have no patience for amateurs. I’d do well with someone who knows the difference between when I’m in the mood for affection and when I’d like some space.

ASPCA: Why, Gibbons, are you moody?

GIBBONS: Harumph! You call it moody. I call it particular. I’ll have you know I can be quite a bit of fun.

ASPCA: We never doubted it, G. Not for a second.

We catch Gibbons smile ever so slightly. When he realizes we’ve noticed, he quickly turns his head and gazes out the window.
