Parents, Talk with ASPCA Expert About Humane Education!

How can I reinforce humane education for my kids during the summer?

Why is it important for kids to learn about animal welfare?

I heard you have a
book club—can I sign up?

Hey parents, want to chat about raising the next generation of veterinarians, animal cops, shelter workers and volunteers? If you’d like some great suggestions for teaching your kids how to begin a lifetime of loving and respecting animals, please join Joanne Pentangelo, ASPCA Humane Education Specialist, for a live discussion on Friday, May 9. She’ll be waiting for you on the ASPCA Online Community from noon to 2:00 P.M. EST, and we at the ASPCA—especially the four-legged “staff”—are grateful for your interest in showing kids how to care for the furry members of the family.

I frequently wonder, often aloud, why parents cannot control, or will not control the actions of their children. It's called discipline and RESPONSIBILITY!My wife and I raised 4 children and had LOTS of companion animals, mostly dogs, and each one of our kids had a pet that they were RESPONSIBLE for. My kids were told in no uncertain terms that they were responsible for a precious life and they were to care for these companions in every way and meet their needs. Now that my children are grown and have families of their own, they carried that learned responsibility with them into adulthood. I can proudly say that they have all turned into 1st class human beings kind and tenderhearted for the less fortunate in our society (people also included). Parents have to step up to the plate and instill responsibility in their children that they are caring for a living being and that, in itself is a heavy burden. If they can't shoulder the load, then don't attempt to "own" a pet. If you care about animal welfare--donate money, supplies, time at your local animal shelter. And BTW, take the kiddies along so they can experience what it feels like, albeit temporary, some responsibility. Thank you.

My dogs have recently began digging in my yard. What can I do to try and get them to stop?
