Time to Talk Puppy Mills

This is a great time for an interactive discussion on puppy mills. Not only is April Prevention of Cruelty to Animals month, but Oprah's recent episode on puppy mills gave them much needed exposure. This is a topic on everyone's minds, and it couldn't be more important.

Join us Friday, April 18, from noon to 2:00 P.M. EST, to talk puppy mills with Bob Baker, ASPCA Investigator, ASPCA Anti-Cruelty Initiatives. He is a key player in our ongoing efforts to combat the cruelties of puppy mills and large-scale commercial breeding operations. The chat will take place on the ASPCA Online Community.

Here, arm yourself with some great puppy mill information in preparation for the chat.

Aw man! I REALLY wish I could be here to talk with Bob. He sounds like a GREAT person I could talk to about the Puppy Mills.
But I've got to be at school.

But Bob, if your looking at this,
you're a wonderful inspiration.

I recently did a blog about puppy mills (chrisandmelissasblog.blogspot.com). I'm so tired of hearing about this problem - and what I mean by that is, I just can't believe it's still in existence to be considered a problem! Come on people, it's probably the easiest way you can fight animal cruelty - you don't have to do anything, just don't buy puppies from pet stores! Thank you ASPCA for educating so many others.

Huge kudos to all those who made the Oprah feature possible. She reaches so many that there will undoubtedly be a change in the industry as a result of your hard work. I can't wait to see pet stores without barking puppy-mill puppies in the windows.

I am a frequent visitor to Lancaster County, PA. I recently found out that many Amish farmers have puppy mills. While I do love this part of the county and I will not stop going there, I do believe it is the responsibility of the State of Pennsylvania and the County of Lancaster to uncover these puppy mills and to prosecute these offenders to the fullest extent of the law. It proves that in every culture, no matter how peace loving they may seem, there are always some bad apples. Of course you cannot judge an entire culture for the actions of a few, however I do believe that the Amish community as a whole should not turn their heads away from this problem and should help law enforcement to track down these culprits.

puppy mills: do the right thing
response from susan:
At this point in time it is totally legal for commercial breeders to breed and sell dogs in the manner they do. It is your state legislators who need to come to conclusions about what is right or wrong with regard to dogs in this environment. They hold the key through our state laws as to what can and cannot be done. The Dog Law Bureau can only enforce the laws we have, and cannot make changes or take any action outside of those laws. Unfortunately, our state Dog Law is not very strong and very much needs to change.

In May, Governor Rendell will have an updated state Dog Law introduced into the House of Representatives. This bill contains provisions for solid flooring, more space and exercise. It also addresses some legal areas that have hindered our Bureau in prosecutions. Please watch for the introduction of this Bill. If you agree with its content, the biggest thing you can do to help the dogs would be to write to all members of the House Agriculture and Rural Affairs Committee. That is where this bill will go first. Handwritten letters are taken very seriously compared to form letters. This bill needs to move out of committee with as few changes as possible and go to the full House for a vote. We need your help and the help of your family and friends to make this happen! There will be many opposing voices trying to stop this bill or ensure that it is watered down. This is where you can make a difference. Our legislators need to know what the public wants. Without your voice, this Bill may not succeed.

I hope you will consider acting on behalf of the dogs. Thank you for your concern with this issue.

I need to say, ASPCA, do whatever you can to stop cruelty! Make it a law not to do animal cruelty. (first thing that came to my mind, sorry!)
Well, have you noticed how hard it is to stop animal cruelty? And THAT`S why it`s a foundation, NOT a group of people. Animals are more important than some group of silly teens who will probably not even worry about animals at that time. (technically speaking, not even their life) Some teens are like that, but I`d much prefer ASPCA than a group of, even very determined, teens. I feel better that the ASPCA is such a success in peoples lives.

Sweet. Interesting. QUITE THE OPPOSITE! I really don`t like puppy mills! They aren`t interesting, let alone sweet! But, that`s not my point. My point is, animal cruelty is HORRIBLE.And since I love dogs to DEATH, puppy mills are one of the worst animal cruelty items EVER to me!

But, I can`t say that not praising your dog for sitting for the five-millionth time all day is bad! It`s just that, well, animal cruelty? To me, when people ask me if I ran a puppy mill, I`m like, "What`s a puppy mill?" being sarcastic, and I tell them," Go to my house, and look in there! No puppies! Just an old dog, Lucy! THAT`S ALL!"

I am legal to repeat it, everyone. It should be ILLEGAL to run puppy mills! All they do is mill, mill, mill the puppies! They don`t take care, care, care of them! It`s rude, cruel, and worse!
I have great facts on dogs here!
1.If one tries to fight, lie on the ground, stomach up. That shows you don`t want to fight.
2. If one tries to bite, cover your face with your hands. They might try to bite your face, so instead, you`d get bit in the hands first, not the face.
3. Dogs are like little people. You shouldn`t starve them if you don`t like to be starved. First with this point, I must give a good example. Say, you give thema coin to eat. (first thing that came to my mind, sorry!)That would be like giving yourself a coin to eat. And if the dog is really clueless about what he`s going to eat, he`ll really eat it. So it`ll be sad when he chokes. So, that`s a few facts on dogs. I`ll post a bit later, when I get back from my flight to the States, OK?
bye,
