In Praise of Older Cats; Tell Us Your Story

Has your elderly kitty retired into luxurious windowsill lounging, reminiscing over her lifetime of catnapping and chasing felt mousies? It's not uncommon for cats to reach their twentieth birthday, and this June, for Adopt-A-Shelter Cat month, we want to honor your wise old buds.

If you have an elderly feline who’s living the good life in her golden years, please send a photo and adoption story to catstory@aspca.org. You may be featured on our website this June.

I have 4 cats. My oldest is 15ish, we got him from a rescue about 13 years ago so we are unclear of how old he is but we dont care, it has be the best match ever. He had an unhappy start but now he is the king of the castle and will let you know it in a friendly way. He is an indoor cat that does what he wants when he wants, he is the best.

I have 4 cats, which range in age from 7ish to 18ish. I've had Sasha, the olderst, since she was a cute little ball of fur and my youngest child was in Middle School (she's now married with children). She had major surgery in May of 2007 and my vet says that it was a very gutsy move, but it worked out extremely well as she is now "good as new". I believe she's getting a little senile at times, but don't most of us at her age? She's very much loved and does anything her little heart desires any time she wants. She has a wonderful life and as my vet says, "I hope she's around for another 5 years!" She has always been an indoor cat - she has no desire to even go out for a short while - and I believe that this is one of the reasons she is still with me and pretty healthy for her age. She's on a special diet, along with all my cats, and I believe that helps her stay alert and happy.

I am the proud owner of 5 cat's. At the moment I my cat's ages range from 1 year to almost 18. There are 3 boys and 2 girls. The boys are 1, 5 & 9. The girls are 10 and 18. Pollyanna (whom is my soon to be 18 yr. old) was an early birthday present to me from my parents. She has by far used up her 9 lives and many more. Everyday with her is a joy and we are just counting down till October 6 when Polly will turn a beautiful 18 years old. All my cat's are indoor and have been spayed or neutered to have make there lives better. Polly's greatest activity is sleeping and wondering around waiting for her canned cat food and her special treat turkey cut up just for her.

I don't really know how old my cat Princess is. She was living with a family down the street from me when I moved into the neighborhood. They had kids who were wild, out of control, and thought it was fun to chase her and torment her. The only time she was fed was when they remembered her existence and threw some dry cat food down on the sidewalk for her. As summer ended and the cold weather set in, I'd find Princess huddled up on my front porch, so I opened the door and invited her in. She was so well behaved and grateful to be in out of the cold weather. At night she'd hop up on my bed and stay there all night purring. I'd let her out in the morning but late in the afternoon she'd be waiting to come inside again. Finally her owner stopped putting food out for her and just forgot about her. When I moved, Princess came with me. She's very happy where we are. She spends her days in the yard or on the porch, but comes in at night and sits with me while I'm writing, and in all honesty I focus better and am more relaxed when she's with me. I'm very grateful that Princess and I were brought together, because she's one of the great joys of my life.

My squeeky is around 16 years old. I got her when her human mom passed away. She is the boss and doesn't mind letting you know it. She likes to lounge around in her pj's and lay on all of my clean clothes. She likes to be prissy and wants her own way all of the time. Couldn't live without her.

I have a 15 year old cat, Chicklet. She was unwanted when she was 10 so I brought her home. She is happy and very much loved. Also I have Charlie, 10 years old; Tammie Jo, 4 years 8 months; Codie and Cristal, 4 years; Tazmine, 4 years; Tiny, 3 years 8 months and Melissa, 9 months. All were unwanted and needed a home which I gave them. They are all very much loved by my husband and myself

My husband and I have five kids (I mean cats!), the oldest of which is 11 years old. Penny came to us last year at the age of 10. We were preparing to put to sleep our 17-year old Buddin' (sounds like puddin)when our veterinarian's office called us about a cat that was dropped off to be euthanized -- for no reason other than the owners didn't want her any more. We of course adopted Penny right away, just a few days before our sweet Buddin' went to live with her heavenly fauther. Penny was really a blessing! She is the perfect cat and just wants to be loved. I know in my heart that the good Lord was looking out for us and her, and that he will bless us with many more years together!
