Catch Oprah's Puppy Mill Show Today

As an animal advocate, you are well aware of the horrors of puppy mills, and may know that there are thousands of these large-scale breeding facilities all over the United States—but many Americans don’t.

Thanks to The Oprah Winfrey Show today, millions of viewers will learn about the realities of this cruel industry. Oprah’s investigator, Lisa Ling, went undercover into a handful of Pennsylvania’s puppy mills to bring national attention to the abuses that take place there. Raising awareness is one of the most important ways to effect change for puppy mill dogs—and we are so grateful to Oprah for tackling this important issue. Please take a moment and thank The Oprah Winfrey Show—and encourage her to do a follow-up!

Thankyou to Oprah. Someone had to air a show like this to let people know how ignorant and just plain cruel they are when they treat anilmals unfair. I cant believe this kind of thing goes on still! I dont care what you believe in or how you think animals should be treated, if you have a puppy mill or mistreat an animal, you should be jailed and fined and punished to the highest degree! I would help and animal before a human, I dont even believe in breeding, we have to many animals in the world, and I truly believe that breeders do it for the money not the animal. Wak Up already World!!!

I anticipated that it would be a moving show and I was doing pretty well until they started showing the dogs who were chosen for euthanasia. I know about the tens of thousands of animals killed each year - but to see it - it was unbelievable.

I truly believe that this show will save thousands of animals' lives. Now what we must do is spread the word - copy our tapes of the show and write to Oprah, thanking her for doing the show. We already contact our legislators, so now we must urge our family and friends to do so too.

I think the most important thing Oprah did was to show the connection between pet stores, puppymills, the lack of spaying/neutering, and euthanized dogs. As we all know, too many people just don't understand the connection.

I was very happy that Oprah addressed this issue. I wasn't aware of Puppy Mills and I sure wasn't aware that pet stores received their puppies from there. That is sickening and I couldn't believe what I was watching. I cried the entire show. But once again why should we be shocked about some of the disgusting inhumane things that humans do because they can. It's sickening and sometimes I wish the things that humans did to animals, were done to them. I wonder how they would like it. We must take a stand and keep this from happening. Why aren't these puppy mills illegal. They should be illegal and only honest breeders should be allowed to breed dogs. Also, why don't the shelters provide the pets to the pet stores. I guess they have a right as to where they get their pets. I hope this show today has made all animal lovers aware that something needs to be done to stop this.

Oprah's Show really shed light on the horrors that helpless animals endure at Puppy Mills. I am a resident of PA and live about 30 miles from Lancaster County. Apparently, there are a large number of terrorized animals in my own backyard. I always questioned the Amish's treatment of their animals, now I know. Something needs to be done to end this ABUSE! Amish tourism in Lancaster County is huge, it should be boycotted! As well as, we need to voice our anger to lawmakers in PA and all over the country! Speak up, I know I will be!

This show had me in tears for hours. I was unable to sleep and know there must be something we can do to close puppy mills.

What can be done and how can we go about getting states to pass laws on them?

Well I saw this show and I couldn’t stop crying (and im 24) at what I was seeing. During the show I knew I had to do something about this. I want to start online petition of 1million+ signatures to make it against the law for having any type of animal mills. That show and what I saw it still on my mind and it’s effected me a lot knowing that this is happening and nothing is being done. I need people to help and make this a big issue in our county and maybe just maybe something can be done. Where here to help those that can’t help themselves. Any advice. Please help me with making a difference in animals lives.... thanks

I didn't catch the show but I'm sure it would've made me sick. Puppy mills have always disgusted me, along with pets sold in stores like cheap property. But from what I've seen of dogs procured from even reputable breeders, it's still a greed-based endeavor. Pups are snatched from their mothers and siblings WAY too early - before they've had a chance to be taught any 'manners' re: interaction with others. I don't know how many hyperactive puppies I've seen, prone to nipping and gnawing and it's unnecessary. These are traits that a mother would train out of the pup were it with her long enough. But greedy breeders want their money ASAP, and the owners want to have a cute, cuddly, tiny thing to take home before it's really ready. It does make a difference.

People need to speak out to make a difference. These puppy mills are all about the almighty dollar, if people do not buy from them there will no longer be a demand. It is a horrible disgrace the way the animals are treated.

If a woman was treated like a puppy mill dog:

You are locked in the worst outhouse you can imagine (we've all been there). Your captors send in a man to impregnate you now and then. With nothing to do, all you can do is wait... On cold days, you are very cold as there is no one to snuggle with; and on warm days, it's even worse as the smell from the latrine worsens and gets into your pores. You become huge and uncomfortable until the pain of birth begins. You have your baby for a couple of weeks but it is soon whisked away from you to be sold to strangers. In a way, you are glad that your child doesn't have to suffer like you (you hope). You reek of stink as you do not get baths and your hair is all matted because you don't have a brush. Your water is served slimy and your food has maggots in it. There is no joy and nothing to occupy your mind with. There is no way to escape as your captors have locked the door and you are not strong enough to force your way out. You wonder what could you have done to be imprisoned so miserably? You have a kind, generous & loyal heart... Whenever you yell, someone bangs on the door and yells, "shut up", if there is someone there at all. If you yell too much, a metal rod is rammed down your throat in order to damage your vocal cords. No anesthesia, no doctor's visits. You may not recover. As soon as you cannot reproduce, you are taken out and shot. You have never known love, nature, companionship, etc. Your life didn't matter to anyone. No one ever thought you special enough to rescue. Nevertheless, someone has made a few bucks...

Help stop the demand for puppy mill dogs by supporting your local animal shelter! You can adopt or sponsor warm, loving dogs who will be wonderful companions!

My friend made a cute video about sponsoring shelter animals - check it out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLVgr0egWlQ
