Chat About Your Dog's Health With ASPCA Vet -- TODAY!
We've mentioned it a few times, but it's worth repeating: October is Adopt-A-Shelter-Dog Month! Here to kick things off is Dr. Lila Miller, ASPCA Vice President, Veterinary Outreach. Dr. Miller will join us for a live, online TODAY from noon to 2:00 P.M. EST, to answer your health questions about shelter dogs and your own pups. Here are a couple of examples:I am interested in adopting a special needs dog—what do I need to be prepared for?
What are some less obvious signs that it’s time to take my dog to the vet?
How do small shelters with little money deal with a dog’s health problems?
Miller has been working with pooches at the “A” for almost 30 years and has recently co-edited the first textbook on shelter medicine, Shelter Medicine for Veterinarians and Staff. She’s currently working on a textbook devoted to the management of infectious diseases in shelters.

I have a 5-yr. old very mixed shepherd who was brought home by my kids because her previous owners did not treat her well, almost to the point of abuse. She's been with me for 4-1/2 yrs. now. She has constant issues, either tinkling on the rug or getting into the trash. I am considering getting a 2nd dog. I'm also afraid that her behavior might get worse. Any thoughts?
I want to clip my dog(s) nails. One of them, my Rottie has black nails. How can I see the vein so that I don't accidently clip it and cause bleeding and pain?
Thanks.
Hello,
we presently have a dog in rescue that is having some problems. Overall a healthy appearing and "normal" 2 year old Border Collie. Everything is well untitl he gets reprimanded for inappropriate behavior in his foster home. After being corrected, he will vomit bile, followed by a liquid, red in color, the consistency of tomato juice or soup. After which he seems to be in a fair amount of discomfort. Within an hour or so after, he is back to his normal, playful self. The vet is at a loss as routine exams seem normal. I would also mention this dog has what has been diagnosed as "chronic diaharrea and is on prescription food. He is fine as long as he stays on his prescription diet. Because he is a rescue dog, we only have the info the owner provided us with. Of being relinquished, we never know how much info we relly get.
Any thoughts???

I just wanted to say that I think this is a very smart idea, and I am glad that the ASPCA has finally made a specialist so easily accessible. I do not have a pet yet, but someday I will and I would like to be able to use this service. I would like to suggest, that someone make a blog/chat site to access animal specialists 24-7. I know an incident, when a friend and I needed assistance and could find no where to get it.
hi, my 22mo. old rottie keeps scratching, & biting herself, near her anus. she doesn't have fleas. what could it be? tina
I live in IL. I recently went to the local farm store to purchase pet vaccinations. The cooler was nearly bare so I inquired as to when they may get more. The clerk hesitated, said she didn't think they would get more, that veternarians want them pulled from the shelves. It runs about $5 for the soloject 7 shot. I am fearful how many pets will not get the shot if people are unable to do them. I do all my dogs and dogs for friends, family and my daughters cat. I fear many won't be vaccinated if I can no longer purchase them and do it for these pets. Do you, or anyone, have any idea what I can do to keep these vaccines available in our community? I hate to see pets not vaccinated because of what I assume is greed. Thanks for any suggestions anyone may have!!
