ASPCA Applauds Strong and Swift NFL Response to Michael Vick’s Guilty Plea

ASPCA Press Release

NEW YORK—The ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) today applauded NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell’s strong and decisive action in suspending Michael Vick without pay, effective immediately, from the League. Vick will be appearing in a federal court in Richmond, Va., on Monday to file his plea agreement in the federal dog fighting case against him.

Said ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres, “Right from the outset, we knew the Commissioner was taking this case extremely seriously—and respected the fact that he was proceeding appropriately by commissioning an independent investigation into the case.”

In a strongly worded letter to Vick, the Commissioner today called his admitted conduct “not only illegal, but also cruel and reprehensible.”

“The Commissioner’s extremely strong and swift response today to Michael Vick’s guilty plea is no less than what we expected, and reinforces how seriously he takes not just the integrity of the League, but his expectations of how animals should be treated in a humane society. The ASPCA is proud to be associated with the National Football League as its animal welfare partner, and we will continue to raise public awareness on the humane treatment of animals together.”

Now that the ASPCA has been given custody of Michael Vick's dogs by the courts, it would be wonderful if you could keep us updated on the progess of these dogs, the plans for their rehabilitation (which will be extremely challenging I know), etc.

After hearing and seeing so many terrible images from this case over the past several months, I know that getting some first-hand reports (and possibly some pictures) on how these dogs are faring now that they are is safe hands now would be much appreciated.

I am so glad the NFL has taken the initiative to show this man possible jail time isn't the only penalty he will have to face. Nike has also terminated his contract. It sickened me to read dogs were killed because they didn't perform in training session. Personally, the law isn't stern enough, people don't take this topic seriously. I hope Mike Vick gets the maximum jail time, the max penalties and wont benefit after the fact with publicity. I applaude former fans and others that donated Vick's jerseys to the animal shelters for the dogs to sleep on.

My congratulations to the NFL commissioner for his swift action in the Vick catasthrophe. Now what he should do is realistically consider a ban so that no other inconsiderate NFL owner signs Vick.
Vick's conduct was cruel and immoral and in no way, shape or form be condoned by a slap on the wrists. Let his financial future reflect the same considerations he had for the dogs. He (Vick) has the capacity for reasoning what reasons caused him to murder the dogss. Suffer, Vick, Suffer. And think about the dogs as long as the media lets you twist in the winds of public opinion.

We commend the action taken about Vicks involvement in dog fighting.
An famous ahtlete like him should be a model for younger generations, but he failed terribly to do so.
I think he should be also helped to develop with his own money(which he has plenty of)fund generously a shelter for abused pitbulls.

I hope Michael Vick gets locked up for a very long time. It's people like him that give these animals such a bad reputation.I have a male Staffordshire Bull Terrier who just turned 9 this month. He is the most loving pet I've ever had.He even loves cats..he treats them like they are his babies.I am so angered by this.Dogfighting needs to be stopped. It's such a vicious act.I sincerely hope that Vick is severely punished for his actions.

I have just read your story on the Vick case, and along with it being on my Homepage News this morning I have only a couple of items to mention.
Michael Vick will NOT do any time as he is first Black, second a Pro Football Player. I am NOT BIASED against ANY COLOR, but he has been got out of trouble since he played at VA TECH. I have witnessed it myself as I used to go to the games every weekend as I live in the VA Tech area. He stayed in trouble with the Law then, and even now it continues. I am White, and IF it was a White Person I would feel the SAME WAY. He DESERVES what those Poor Dogs went through himself. I only wished that I WAS the JUDGE in the case with FULL Decision at the outcome. ANYONE who tortures and kills animals are not worth the breath they use on this Planet. They ARE a Boil on the Butt of Society that NEEDS to be Lanced. I do hope he goes to Prison at the least, and gets put in with an Animal Lover 400lbs, and called Bubba. He DESERVES what he puts out, MISERY. The Animals he had part in killing WAS MORE Human then he is OR ever will be. SHAME on VA Tech, shame on the Atlanta Falcons, and shame on Vick himself. Too bad there could not be a DOG JUDGE, and a DOG JURY, but what does that matter as he is not going to Court anyhow. It seems that Evil and Idiotacy rules in today's world. Evil especially. He can lie to US, BUT he cannot LIE to GOD. YES I believe in Christ with all my heart, so lets not let everyone line up and say this is not a Christian attitude. GOD CALLS for Justice, either here on this earth, OR when ALL stands in front of HIM on Judgment Day to pay for their actions. Believe me, God Created the Animals also, and being a part of His Creation, one does not make God Angry or there WILL BE H, E, Double Hocky Sticks to PAY.

SO GRATEFUL FOR THE WORK THAT YOU HAVE DONE ON THIS ISSUE OF EXTREME SAVAGERY. I DO INDEED APPLAUD THE NFL RESPONSE TO VICK'S GUILTY PLEA.I ALSO DO APPAULD NIKI FOR NOT ENDORSING vICK.

I SINCERELY HOPE THAT HE NEVER RETURNS TO ANY PRO SPORT. IT WOULD BE A CATASTROPE FOR ANY AND ALL SPORT FANS TO ABSORB.

I TRULY AM SORRY I EVEN KNOW HIS NAME.

Way to go, ASPCA! Please stay vigilant in this case and all other cases of this sort. Not all of them will receive the media attention inherent in high-profile cases, so we rely upon your continued efforts even when animal cruelty is conducted "in the shadows". My hope and prayer is that the animals rescued in the Vick case will not be foresaken and you and the community at large will perform whatever miracles necessary to rehabilitate and find appropriate homes/placement for these poor creatures who have endured the unthinkable at the hands of idiotic and sadistic humans. I know saving their lives is the hard thing to do, but I have every confidence in your organization's ability to carry it off.
Thank you and bless you all!

I hope that this case will draw more and more attention to this so-called "sport." How anyone who thinks of themselves as a human being can participate in anything so monstrous is beyond me. I used to think that it would be impossible to stop this brutality, but perhaps I was wrong. I hope I was. Bringing this and other cruelty-cockfighting and hog-dog rodeos, etc. might be just what is needed to put a stop to these horrors perpetrated against animals.

Guys, please just stop all of your bs. I'm tired of hearing you all cry about dogs. I wish you would pull your heads out of your you know whats and get real. A dog is a dog, plain and simple. 100% percent replaceable and not a big deal. The priorities in this country are so dang screwed up and ridiculous it's sad. Why don't you focus your energy on something more important like fighting the drug epidemic in this country--or something with more of a purpose. Animals are useless junk which people should pay absolutely no attention to. Focus your energy on something more positive then dogs.
I hope everyone one of you guys are vegeterians because you would be damn hypocrites other wise. Please just keep your little protests and what not to yourself and stay out of everybody's way. If in doubt just do everyone a favor and SHUT UP. Nobody gives a rip about what you have to say. And leave Michael Vick alone. The guy has done more for the sports world then any of you losers have ever done with you little protests. So he likes to fight dogs--oh well, dogs are a dime a dozen, "rid and replace". Just please shut up and stay out of the media.

Some press releases suggest that PETA and HSUS are suggesting the Micheal Vick dogs must be euthanized as impossible to adopt out.
The Virginian-Pilot, which has been following the case as it has unfolded in Virginia, notes that:

“Best Friends Animal Society in Utah, which rescued abandoned pets after Hurricane Katrina, offered rehabilitation and its 33,000-acre property as a new home for some of the pit bulls.”
But adds that:

“People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals and the Humane Society of the United States recommended euthanasia as the only option for dogs trained to fight.”

These innocent dogs should not receive the death penalty just for being so unlucky as being born into the reprehensible dog fighting world.

Best Friends in Utah will care for them lovingly and has the expertise, resources and generosity to rehabilitate many or most of them and to give a happy life to those who can't safely go into adoption.
Best Friends or other similar saintly rescues will care for them humanely and rehab as many as possible while keeping the public safe.
Please don't let them be euthanized. That would be cruel while there are alternatives. And it would dampen the groundswell of public energy to end dog fighting.
Sincerely,
John T Eyre MD

I am glad that serious action is being taken against Mr Vick. What he has done is loathsome. I would like to suggest that on top of his sentence, he also serve community service time in an animal shelter. There he will have to care for and clean up after all the unwanted and injured animals. See their suffering first hand. Then perhaps he will truly understand the magnitude of his actions and fully accept his consequences. Then perhaps after a year (or perhaps five years) of community service he should go on to community education....oh, and he should not get paid big bucks for any of it!

I want the ascpa and all of the world to know that pits are just for fighting. About 2 years ago we found an under weight pit who had been used to fight and he was so badly beaten that he didn't even want to eat. He had cuts so deep in his mouth that i was shocked that they didn't go through. He aslo didn't even flinch when we cleaned out his wounds. Not only did we take him to the vet to get help but we kept him. My kids love him he is great with our other dog. And my cat tolerates him. I am so tired of people saying that pits are bad. They are only bad if they are taught to be. But our pit handsome proves even that thought wrong. He not only was raised to fight but he had been in some fights and yet still he is the most lovable dog i have ever had. I hope people understand its not the dog its their owners. Hate the Deed not the Breed. There are other dogs out there that are just as aggressive. Please think about that next time people tell you that its just pits.
Thanks for letting me vent

I gave money to HSUS to support and CARE for the Vick dogs. NOW HSUS says Kill them?! i know a lot of people who gave money (i gave $100) to HSUS and they never had the dogs and never had the authority to support them? this is outrageous. Can ASPCA get the funds from HSUS that so many people donated to a fraudulent organization? im livid. ASPCA please dont kill these dogs. even the most brutal deserve a tiny bit of calm and happiness. let best freinds in Utah take them. please let them enjoy some tiny bit of a decent life. even if it is eat good food, clean water, and lie in the sun.
Im asking HSUS to return my money that i gave to their illegal and reprehensible plea for money.

I am watching ESPN for the first time today and am very happy but at the same time somewhat disappointed. In the press conference with Arthur Blank he says that this situation has "tarnished their team" and does give a lot of support and sympathy to the poor animals that had to be tortured in this way but he also says that they "cannot tell today that Michael Vick is cut from the team." This outrages me because these people take the role, not only as football players, but as role models and frankly I think when someone does something so outrageously irresponsible they should get this taken away from them. Not only this but people are using so many excuses for him, such as they are making an example of him because he is African American or because he is a celebrity. To this I say, I didn't even know that he was African American when I first heard this story and made my mind up that I think he should be mega fined, go to prison and not be able to play football. As for being a celebrity (which someone on TV compared to the arrest of Lindsay Lohan) and said that they should not be treated any different than regular people and should not be as publicized....well, you got into this business to be famous! If you were paying me like $5 million a year you could videotape and show the world my DUI (I don't have one but hypothetically) Famous people are examples and role models to children and regardless if they want to or not, they should be made an example of. It also some what outrages me that DMX also recently has been investigated for, if not fighting dogs at least greatly neglecting them, and this hasn't been publicized nearly as much as it should be. I hope that everyone on this website is as outraged and disappointed as I am that these terrible things still exisit in this world. I would also like to express my pride in the ASPCA in their role of hopefully getting Michael Vick in a lot more trouble than he would have been if they wouldn't have spoke up!

I applaud the actions of all of the involved agencies. I worry however that the dogs, since it is likely that not many of them are "placeable" in homes will be euthanised. This action lets everyone involved "off the hook". Once the dogs are gone, people will forget. I think all of Vick's millions are best suited to building a special facility. A facility large enough and posh enough to care for these, and other, dogs rescued from fighting organizations for the rest of their very well cared for natural lives. Build this facilty in an area that can benefit from having an influx of specialty employment opportunities, make it large ebough to need say about 50 - 70 full time staff members, make it a center for education and outreach to bring about an end to the practices of dog fighting. I read in the plea deal where Mr. Vick is financially responsible for these dogs, well let him bear the total financial responsibility for caring for each and every one of those 50 dogs, and whatever special handling and housing needs they have. Create an organization, name it for him, make him spend his community service time training to be a rehabilitator for these animals and make him work 8 hour days in the kennels giving these animals real care. Keep the cameras rolling and the spotlight aimed right at him and let him really become a role model for America's children. Show the world that the punishment really can fit the crime and that taking responsibility for your actions means changing your life not just your words.

Michael Vick offered his "apology" today. He says he found Jesus and the best thing for him to do is to turn his life over to god.

But where was god in his life before his life and career were ruined?

He's not sorry. He should not be forgiven. He and anyone else that harms animals in such a way should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

Furthermore, if he gets a slap on the wrist through payoff or such, what does it say about what we think about animals in general?

Are we so irresponsible to just brush such atrocities under the rug for such self-righteous reasoning?

I hope not. Something must be done. He nor anyone else should any longer get away with committing such crimes against the trust and responsibility we owe to the animals that are sold as pets as they are bought and sold to become members of our family --and not as Romanesque entertainment.

Please don't be stupid and fall for Vick's "apology."

Michael Vick is full of you-know-what.

Michael Vick needs to do hard time and so does his accomplices. If anyone doesn't think this is a serious crime, maybe you should ask to see videos of dogfighting. There is something very wrong with Michael Vick and those who participate in and condone this savagery. If Vick and his ilk could get away with it, they would do this to people too.

According to CNN:
Vick agreed to "make restitution for the full amount of the costs associated" with the dogs that are being held by the government.

"Such costs may include, but are not limited to, all costs associated with the care of the dogs involved in that case, including if necessary, the long-term care and/or the humane euthanasia of some or all of those animals."

I say build a seperate facility just for the care of the unadoptable dogs and make Mike Vick pay for them for the rest of their lives.

I would like to "Thank" NFL Commissioner for taking a strong stand. I just hope this doesn't fizzle out as Michael Vic starts apologizing. I just heard him on the Today Show and what did he say, "He is sorry he is so immature and he is going to grow up". Excuse me being immature doesn't make someone torture and kill animals because they didn't perform. He is a killer and should be treated like one for many years. I know after he serves his sentence (what ever it is) he will be allowed to come back, I just hope he is never allowed to play professional sports and endorse any products, that is a great punishment for him. It is time to send a strong message no matter what color they are or if they are a celebrity. I am so disgusted with the NAACP, for once they should stand up and tell the public they are ashamed of him; instead they think he should be allowed to return to sports. They don’t think that about IMUS do they, I am sick of double standards in this country.

Anonymous (you'll know who I mean after you read this)
Why don't you just go live in your evil world and leave the rest of us, who love dogs, alone.
Who the h**l do you think you are? Your comments are vile and your attitude toward dogs sucks pond scum.
I pity you. Why do you hate dogs so much? Is it because they spot the ugliness in you?
Michael Vick is a walking bag of puss. His heart is a toxic waste dump! So his skin is black! I wouldn't care if it is green, his actions were sickening and must never be forgotten. Why don't you go join him?
You say that dogs aren't worth anything . . . well, buddy . . . You aren't worth one dog toenail! If you dropped dead after you read this, No Big Loss! After all, I only know you from your comment, and I wouldn't blink an eye if I saw you in the path of a runaway train. My response would be: oops.
The world would be a much better place if you and Michael Vick weren't in it.
So, what have you ever contributed? No, Let me guess . . . NOTHING!
Dogs have saved lives!!! Have you? Dogs have given the ill and elderly love and comfort, have you? Dogs have given children comfort and love, have you? Dogs serve the blind, and assist those with disabilities, do you? Dogs assist police officers, even giving their lives in protection of their "officer", have you? Dogs give their heart to their loved ones, do you? Dogs will stick by their "person" through thick and thin, do you?
From your "comments" I'd feel pretty secure in saying - You don't equal the character of dogs in either word or action. I pity you!
It's you, dude, who needs to pull your head out of your ass and get a clue.
Assuming you're not totally ignorant, here's a clue from Albert Einstein who said "The life of the individual only has meaning in so far as it aids in making the life of every living thing nobler and more beautiful. Life is sacred, that is to say, it is the supreme value to which all other values are subordinate."
From your comments, obviously, your life has no meaning because from your own admission, you neither want or seek to make the life of every living thing nobler and more beautiful. Again, I pity you.
Unlike you, I am proud to leave my name at the end of my comments to you.

To All Blog Readers:
I have already posted a reply comment to one of the anonymous posters who wrote against dogs. I simply couldn't let it pass.
However, I, too would like to applaud the actions of the ASPCA, and the comments of the NFL.
It concerns me that the sense of what Michael Vick did is being treated as a victim-less crime, or at worst, one of breaking NFL rules, and illegal gambling.
The victims of his crimes are the dogs. The ones he fought, and most of all, the ones he tortured to death.
This man is a "nothing special" sports star who has committed vile and evil acts. He is (hopefully no longer) a millionaire, and has had, at his wish, almost anything he wanted. Yet, what did he want to do? Not just participate (bad) in one of the most cruel and bloody activities humans do (dog fighting - worse)but organize and bankroll the activity!!! Not to mention the evil ways he killed the dogs not vicious enough for him!!!!
People, there are kids out there who look up to him as a role model. Do we really want to accept his apology and get on with life? What message does that send to impressionable kids? Do something really wrong & bad, apologize, get a little punishment, and be on your merry way????
I, for one, cannot accept our courts giving him just a slap on the wrist. He deserves a judgment that will reflect the vile nature of his actions. 5 years in prison is NOT enough! Bankruptcy is NOT enough!
Given that he wasn't doing it for money, and he wasn't doing it out of ignorance, he must have done those monstrous acts because he got some sort of perverse pleasure from it!
This scares me no end. There is a man out there who enjoyed the pain, suffering, and fear of innocent dogs. He was aware that what he was doing was wrong, but did it anyway - because he wanted to. BECAUSE HE WANTED TO!!!!!
Think of the other innocents in this world? Children!!!! If he can do these things to innocent dogs, it's only a nightmare away that he gets an opportunity to turn his sights on any children he can get control of.
It has already been proven that people who torture and kill animals are possibly just a step away from torturing and killing people!!!! Check out the backgrounds of known serial and mass murderers. Frighting!
Anyway, I think it's clear that more focus needs to be placed on the victims of his crimes. Now that he has admitted his guilt and apologized, I fear we'll forgive him and forget his victims. This man is dangerous, and can possibly cause immeasurable pain and suffering in the future.
Furthermore, the innocent victims of this evil man are in danger of being further victimized, by being put to death, because he taught them that they must fight!!!!
I have learned that Best Friends has offered to care for the innocent dogs confiscated from Michael Vick, and in doing so, save their lives. I hope and pray the right thing is done for these dogs.
After living in hell for however long they did - they deserve a chance to live with kindness in their remaining years!!!
So, Thank You ASPCA!! It is wonderful to know that my contributions over the years have truly been used to speak for those who have no voice, except ours, in this society!!
It gladdens my heart to see from these posts (except one) that many people share my feelings overall!
I'll close this with my most sincere prayer; Bless and Protect the Beasts and the Children! Keep them safe from evil acts by evil people!

Thank-you to the ASPCA for its efforts regarding the recent dogfighting cases. I think the NFL, and all of America, heard about it.

If there is anything good about the Michael Vick story, it is that there is an emerging increased awareness about animal cruelty and animal fighting. There is so much anger about this issue. If we channel it into a positive direction, hopefully, something good can come of it. However...

I watched Vick's public apology with my little son who USED TO wear Michael Vick jerseys to school. It is disturbing to think a certain percentage of the population is honestly going to be swayed by Michael Vick's "enlightenment" carefully crafted by his overpaid attorneys. Call me a cynic, but I don't believe a man who has been allegedly torturing animals since childhood coincidentally has a religious epiphany as a result of getting caught and losing his job. I hope I am wrong.

I think it is a sad commentary that we, as a culture, are using the Vick story to compare "What's worse?" "What's worse", we ask, "carelessly fathering illegitimate children, or dogfighting?". "Dogfighting or gambling?" "Dogfighting or rape?" "Dogfighting or racism?" "Dogfighting or hateful nationalism?" "Dogfighting or (fill in the blank)....?" The comparisons to dogfighting have been endless.

Dogfighting is one more piece of evidence our country is in need of a spiritual transformation (please note I said spiritual and not necessarily religious). Animals are sentient beings - they feel pain, and they suffer, just like we do. They are not more important, or less important than human beings, but like human beings, they are important, too.

Dogfighting pits one dog against another until one of them dies. The survivor gets his flesh torn off, ears ripped off, eyes pulled out, etc., and the reward for being "a winner" is to writhe in pain until the next fight. Enough said. The pictures make my flesh crawl. The losers are tortured, beaten, starved, electrocuted or drowned. For what? Because these poor creatures were unlucky enough to be born a dog!

Every major faith teaches its followers to be responsible stewards of animals and the Earth. Please help us get the word out that caring for animals, just like caring for people, is an important part of just being a decent person and citizen. If we make this a priority, there will be no more dogfighting horror stories, and no more pointless comparisons of evils. Let us all rise, together, to be better people than we are today, shall we?

I hope that Best Friends will be allowed t take the pit bulls. It is a wonderful organization, and one that I have supported for years. It operates on donations, and vick should be obligated to support them wherever they are. Best Friends always needs donations, so please don't forget about them. If the dogs are euthanized, then in a way, it will be as if vick has won. This should not be about vick, but about what is best for the dogs, and they should definitely be allowed to live the rest of their lives in peace. They certainly deserve it. vick and his buddies should be punished severely, but the emphasis should be about making things better for animals. It will be a very sad thing if all the attention goes to the lowest of the low. It is up to them to do whatever with their lives after their punishment.

I'm referring to the blog that reads "Dog is a Dog, Plain & simple 100% replaceable & not a big Deal. The priorities in this country are so screwed up & ridiculous its sad. Why don't you focus your energy on something more important like fighting drug epidemic in this country. ANIMALS are useless junk which should pay absolutely NO! attention to". So to who ever this person is I do not agree that animals are useless junk. They are "GODS" creation just like you are. Some where along the way you must of bumped your head to make you "HATE" Dogs or all animals in general so much. Yes, i do agree with you on 1 point.... We should & have to lookout for the Illegal drug trafficing & illeagal immigrants that are coming into our country. so yes i do agree with you on that but that is all i'll agree with. Nothing more.. But we also have to lookout for our pets may they be dogs cats horses pigs cows or whatever they are GODS creation.Yes "I" think you are mixed up & detached from the human race otherwise you would not said the things you said.May "GOD " help you. Now, as for "YOU" I want you to view the movies of these dogs being killed & tortured to death for one solid month with NO!!!!! breaks in between movies. Then tell me after they are just DOGS. I hope by then you come to realize they are after all.... I dogs who wants a good LOVING homes. I do hope you have a change of heart after you veiwed those movies & listened to their crys for HELP. If not, may GOD forgive you.

"I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter...the cast-offs of human society. I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness and betrayal. And I was angry.

"God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?"

God was silent for a moment and then He spoke softly. "I have done something," He replied. "I CREATED YOU."
