ASPCA RESPONDS TO FEDERAL INDICTMENT OF MICHAEL VICK

As reported by the Associated Press earlier this week, Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick has been indicted by a federal grand jury and charged with competitive dog fighting, procuring and training pit bulls for fighting and conducting the enterprise across state lines. The 18-page indictment further alleges that the dogfighting operation was started in Vick’s Surry County, Virginia, home in 2001, where multiple dogs were found dead earlier this year.

Says the ASPCA’s Dr. Randall Lockwood, Senior Vice President, Anti-Cruelty Initiatives & Legislative Services, “The violent actions described in the indictment are extremely disturbing, but it is important for the criminal justice system to be allowed to take its course. Hopefully, the evidence gathered in this case will tell the true story of what happened to the animals who suffered and died.”

Vick is scheduled to appear in a Richmond federal court next Thursday, July 26. If convicted of all the charges, the 27-year-old football star could face up to six years in prison.

ASPCA President & CEO Ed Sayres says, “It is gratifying to see federal authorities taking an active role in investigating dog fighting, which is a felony offense in 48 states, and something that we in the animal welfare world take extremely seriously. Federal charges in dog fighting are extremely rare, and we applaud the authorities for giving this crime the attention it deserves.”

Michael Vick should be barred from any pro sports! Anyone who actively supports or engages in any act of cruelty towards animals should be barred from public recognition as a sports figure. He should be banned from the NFL and stripped from any titles! He is a horrible example to children and the public as well. I deplore his actions and participation in such a horrid so-called sport of dogfighting! I can't believe such a public figure would have the audacity to do such a thing! I am truly appauled... It's individuals like this that should make us look harder into who we idolize and adore. What a disgrace! He doesn't even deserve recognition as a human being!!!!! I think the pitbulls should be put in a ring with him! What a moron!!!! V. Nunley

After much digging on the NFL website, I finally found the email contact page: http://www.nfl.com/help/emailtech

I thing that everyone should email the NFL and the commisioner their thoughts on Mr. Vick and his alleged inhumane actions. Here is what I wrote:

Ricky Williams gets suspended for a year+ for smoking marijuana, Pacman for a year for assorted indiscretions, Michael Vick who is charged with cruelty to animals, including dog fighting, killing the maimed dogs by hanging, "body slamming", and other torturous inhumane ways and the NFL takes a wait and see attitude. Mr. Commisioner, stand up and be a man, show that you care about what these "role models" are teaching our future NFL wanna be players and dreamers. Michael Vick, as the PacMan, should be suspended indefinitly until the courts and legal system runs its course. If convicted, Mr. Vick should be banned for life!!! Step up and make a difference, the time is now! I would rather see a football jock somking grass or using steroids than see an animal mauled to a point where it is no longer able to continue to live a normal life, and then is hung or slammed into the ground to kill it instead of a euthanasia process that could be more humane! Hell, if a defense player slams a quarterback into the ground, he is fined and suspended. Don't animals deserve the same protection from Michael Vick as he gets from the NFL? I am truly amazed by your impotence and lack of caring in regards to this horrible ordeal I wish Pete Rozzelle was still commisioner, I would be willing to bet the action would be much stronger!!!

As a regular member and annual supporter of the ASPCA, I must say---I'm feeling rather disppointed in the organization's overly tepid and restrained response to the news of the Michael Vick indictment. I understand how we must allow our legal system to run its due course, but in the interim, the NFL remains disinclined to suspend one of their star, money-making players and Nike has only temporarily delayed the marketing of a new product bearing the alleged animal abuser's name. [Please see today's New York Times sports section for an excellent article by William C. Rhoden regarding this specific information]. I, for one, would like to see the ASPCA take a tougher stand with both the NFL and Nike in this matter. The ASPCA should be actively urging its members to flood their corporate offices with massive numbers of e-mails & letters of protest. Think about it this way--if Mr. Vick were some lowly paid police officer, instead of the famous, fabulously wealthy football player he actually is, (& by unfortunate default, horrible role-model for thousands of children at the same time), you can bet that he would be held accountable to a much higher standard of conduct. His suspension from duty would be unquestionable and immediately forthcoming--no need to wait for a guilty verdict from any court jury. In striking contrast, however, as a money-making machine for both the NFL & Nike, Mr. Vick happily continues to rake-in a multi-million dollar salary. From this point onward however, at least let the truth be known--it's BLOOD MONEY. Innocent Animal BLOOD MONEY.
I'm outraged by the situation. I suspect other ASPCA members might be feeling a similar way. So c'mon, ASPCA! Help your members to put up their collective dukes and fight! Why be so overly prim, proper and concerned about fighting fairly? When it came to fighting his own dogs, Mr. Vick sure as hell never was...

I think that it is totally disgusting the way he abused those dogs, and he should be held accountable for his criminal actions. He must be dropped by the NFL, and spend 42 dog years in JAIL!!!!!!!!!I will along with all my family and friends boycott the NFL,specially the FALCONS, if they keep this MONSTER on their team.

Now we have NFL millionaires fighting dogs and gambling on them. I saw the shots of Vick's backyard. The cages, dogs, bloody carpets. It goes on and on. They make tapes of the fights and send them around the country for sadists to bet on. Don't let this story go away. I for one will never allow the NFL Falcons to be on my TV. I love Football, but I love all animals much more. I wish there was something I could do to help.

Michael Vick should be banned from professional sports. He should be suspended immediately and if found guilty, go to prison and pay a huge fine which should be used to help shelter and homeless animals. Don't be wishy washy in your response to the indictment. Don't let him get away with this. These are innocent animals who depend on us to protect them. Email the NFL, the Atlanta Falcons, all government officials state and federal. Do not buy any merchandise endorsed by or sponsored by the Atlanta Falcons. No person should get away with doing what he did.

I heard that pit bulls have a gland that secerets a certain hormone that makes them aggressive. Other breeds of bulldogs had this gland but it has been bred out of them through the years when they were no longer used for fighting. Pit bulls are naturally aggressive, and it is cruel to use this natural ability for fighting. People like this sicken me. Especially when I hear about a young child who was mauled by pit bulls. The public outcry and the response by ASPCA and PETA concerning Michael Vick is to be commended. This is probably the most important animal cruelty case in ASPCA's history. Michael Vick is the worlds highest paid athelete and the idol and role model of millions of children worldwide. If he is not punished for his crimes we are passively condoning his behavior and activities and telling millions of fans animal cruelty is ok.

Does anyone know where to write to the Commissioner of the NFL to express opinions? The NFL continues to be a place where bad and sometimes criminal behavior is tolerated. The Michael Vick situation is a terrific opportunity for the NFL to take action that shows that they are not going to tolerate this kind of criminal behavior. I'd like to express that opinion to the commissioner and didn't know if the ASPCA had any standardized means of doing so with this case.

Kindest regards,

I'm glad that the ASPCA is helping in the Federal investigation against Vick. I am, however, APALLED, that the Atlanta Falcons would even CONSIDER letting him continue to play, given that he is under federal indictment for this inhumane act. I think it is high time that all of America stands up and contacts Roger Goodall, the NFL Commissioner and also the Atlanta Falcons and protests and lets them know that this is inexcusable. The fact that the young people of our country look up to hoodlums like this as heroes just makes my stomach turn. I hope Vick is put away and given the highest punishment that the law will allow.

As a pet owner, and advocate for animals of all kind, it makes me absolutely ill to read the horrible stories that have come out of this situation. We must be a voice for these voiceless animals, we must not let them have died their cruel horrible death in vain. After giving much thought and reflection to this, I feel that these type of people are disturbed and should not be allowed to participate in events that would make impressions on our youth of today, life in of itself is hard, we need to teach life skills and compassion, we need to be positive roll models for our future leaders, and when a celebrity of ANY kind, sports, theater, TV, music is payed the type of money that this creature has been to be in the lime light then they should adhere to a code of conduct that is worthy of such.
Also, I feel that they should be made an example of, I feel that a simple slap on the wrist with a fine is not that example either. Nor is a jail term in a comfy, clean prison cell with three squares a day, medical treatment and a comfy bed in which to lie their pathetic bodies on. The dogs didn't have a choice in the horrible cruel end they were dealt.
They didn't have the money to hire some big attorney. They didn't have anyone there who cared enough to step in and save them from those savages. If Vic and his posse are not convicted and banded from participating in the NFL, I know that I for one will begin the process of not purchasing ONE THING from any of the corporate sponsors, I will write and blog on behalf of those animals. I think that Vic and his posse should be the men they thought they were when consulting, and communicating with each other on how to end these animals lives, and step to the 50 yard line of the stadium and face a jury of their fans, and let us see then how much of a man each one is. I don't think any of them are man enough to do that. Be a voice for the voiceless...

To the individual that made the post I have pasted below:

American Pit Bull Terriers do not have a gland that secretes a certain hormone that makes them aggressive. The ASPCA has a lot of information about pits and their history http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=cruelty_pitbull. These dogs are extremely loyal and intelligent. They are not naturally aggressive toward people, and in cases where they have been it is likely due to irresponible breeding and ownership. We should be punishing the people that allow these atrocities to occur. Punish the deed, not the breed! They can be very dog aggressive due to the history of dog fighting and the breed. Your viewpoint of the breed is all too common and unfortunate. We need to educate people with the facts of the breed rather than perpetuating the myths. Please take the time to utilize the information that the ASPCA has available as well as pbrc.net. I'm certain that you will find that the American Pit Bull Terrier is the victim of serious abuse and it must be stopped. Informed and responsible owners can help to restore the breed and reputation. We need to protect these dogs from the abuse that all too many of them endure.

I heard that pit bulls have a gland that secerets a certain hormone that makes them aggressive. Other breeds of bulldogs had this gland but it has been bred out of them through the years when they were no longer used for fighting. I have read all the comments, and I would like to know one thing... why is this man being convicted in the media and not in the court of law! All of you seem to have convicted him of a crime, that the law has not. I too love animals and was very upset and angry when I first heard of these allegations, BUT, why aren't you showing this outrage at the thousands of our military being killed in Iraq??? Why is it that we put animals worth higher than that of humans??? Have any of you MARCHED or PROTESTED against our Government for killing, stealing, and breaking the law? You seem to be sensitive and caring people, try showing the same for someone who HASN'T been convicted of a crime, and get angry about those who we can proove have committed crimes against AMERICANS!!!

I agree with all of your comments!! I was reading all kinds of articles on the web and found out Nike is keeping a line of shoes the Vic has named after him, however he is no longer a spokesperson for them. If you go in the HSUS website you can go sign petitions regarding that and him being a thug that he is. Nike must want to sell those for blood money. I also was watching CNN News this morning and I don't know who this man was but he was arguing that Mike Vic will not spend a day in prison because he is to valuable to the NFL. I think these people need to open there nose and start smelling the prison time. I don't care who you are. He has committed numerous felonies and he will charged not only with animal cruelty but other things. They had a warrant to search his home for drugs and thats how they found the bodies of the deceased dogs. I did an internet search and read several news articles and this is how I found my infomation. I found one from the ESPN website and one from the CNN. Dog fighting comes with drugs, weapons, money laundering,he had his BADNEWZ KENNELS on his property with what 55 pitbulls and a full pitbull training camp set up. How is he not going to spend a day in jail. I think the mentallity of these people think that sports is the untouchable realm and no one has to go to jail for anything because they are to valuable. Got news for you!!!! WAKE UP.... They are no more valuable then the life of the dogs you took. Eveybody's life is valuable. We can't pay teachers to teach our chilren, I would hate to be a police officer in today's world, firefighters or look at the armed services they can't get medical care, but sports players get paid millions of dollars for what?? NO ONE like that deserves to keep anything. I agree he should be stripped from all NFL rights they should seize all of his money and assests , go to jail maximum amount he deserves for all charges pending and his money should be donated to animal shelters and maybe to some other causes. He deserves nothing not a penny nothing. He should never be able to play sports again and will never be able to profit from his crime and when he gets out of prison he should be made to pick up after dogs and a homeless shelter for community service, however he may still be violent towards animals. He's probably doesn't care about human life for that matter either. That's my story and I am sticking to it!!!

I wish they would stop showing the actual fight on TV. Not guilty? yeah right. Hopefully we all will realize the epidemic that this truly is. I do not think that there is enough protesting. should go to jail not for 3 months, 6ths months, etc...for a
substantial time...5 years MIN (which isn't even enough)...no parole and on top of that
must do 2 years community service for animals. People who say dogs are JUST animals just don't get it. To hurt an innocent animal without a care in the world easily can translate to abuse in other areas...children, wives, etc. Serial killers are known to start with animals. Get this SOB where it really hurts....do a Tanya Harding...and get him to NEVER play football again. You would be foolish to keep him on the team. If you have animals, you undertand me completely. That shirt with the dogs fighting wasn't some dog fight. It was a picture taken at a dog show, where a dog bit another. It doesn't promote or glorify crime, it just shows that dogs aren't perfect little show animals. They still retain some instinct.
