Pet Food Recall Update: As Pet Food Recall Expands, ASPCA Warns Crisis Not Over: More Cases May Be Seen

With Menu Foods yesterday greatly expanding its recall of pet food products due to new evidence of cross-contamination, the ASPCA today warned pet parents that this crisis is far from over, and urged them to watch their pets closely for any symptoms that may be related to the recall.

“Given the fact that there is new evidence of cross-contamination in ingredients that may have been considered safe prior to this news, we need to be much more aware of where the ingredients in our pets’ food are coming from,” said Dr. Steven Hansen, a board-certified toxicologist and senior vice president with the ASPCA, who manages the ASPCA’s Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), located in its Midwest Office in Urbana, Ill.

“We are strongly recommending that pet parents immediately investigate, via their pet food manufacturer’s Web site or by calling them directly, where the ingredients—specifically protein supplements—are sourced from.”

Given the current situation and until this crisis is resolved, the ASPCA is recommending pets be fed products containing U. S.-sourced protein supplements only.

I am very upset that the Pet Food Recall has lasted as long as it has. Something needs to be done before more animals get sick or die. This is really disturbing.

I am stunned that the Pet Food Recall has lasted as long as it has. It's disturbing to think that this will and has endangered many pet's life. If something is not done about this soon, many animals will die.

These killer foods have been on the market for a long time. It is about time these manufactures and others connected to pet foods are being exposed. Shame on all of them. Thousand of wonderful animals are no longer with us because of this atrocious need for profit. Shame on them.

I lost 4 pugs in Nov. 2006. We were at a loss as to how they could have been poisoned. Now we have answers but it does not make it easier. We will always miss them. They were my children and best friends.

The latest news, not published yet, is stay away from the "Mother Hubbord" pet foods. There are good people working on the problems. It looks as though wellness and mother hubbords foods have rice gluten from China in them, plus other incredients that are deadly.

I became an aspsa member because our bible, [gods word], which the USA is founded on, says that we are responsible for the animals. Whoever is responsible for these crimes will be punished. In the meantime lets get to the bottom of this now and stop the greed for mear financial gain at the cost of our animals lives.

There are three animals in my house. 2 dogs and a cat. The dogs are fed rice and chicken along with their dry food and the cat only gets purina-and no wet food at all.
This madness must stop

This is more outsourced crape! The government is always telling us how outsourceing is so good for us all.
Buy only high quality food made in America. I feed my dogs Innova and they are healthy.

It's so frustrating, we go into the pet store to buy food, we are totally at the mercy of the food manufacturers. My daughter's cat is at the vet now, close to death, and we don't know why. She is broken hearted, I feel her pain. It's so scary.

One solution to this lag time with recalls is the USDA needs to step up and hire more inspectiors. There are well below 1 inspector per state and they just can't be everywhere in the country to protect us and the our prescious canines. I was outraged when I read about the USDA and how they operated. It's almost inhumane.

I cannot believe that this madness hasn't stopped. I have two cats that used to eat IAMS and had to get their blood checked in order to see if they had problems. This better stop soon.
