Pet Food Recall Update: Breaking News From FDA Confirms ASPCA’s Suspicions on Pet Food Toxin
Presence of Melamine Identified in Contaminated Food
NEW YORK, March 30, 2007—Three days ago, the ASPCA® (The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) cautioned that aminopterin was an unlikely suspect in the illnesses and deaths of animals that ingested the recently-recalled contaminated foods—a suspicion that was today confirmed by the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).
In a news conference held today, the FDA announced that further laboratory testing identified the presence of melamine in food samples from the recalled lots. Melamine, which is not highly toxic in general, is used to make durable plastic household products; cleaning products; hard, stain-resistant laminates; flame-retardant foam and in soundproofing.

Thanks for continuing to keep us updated on this scary issue.
does anyone know how this happend and what will be done if foulplay is found to be the case i am very concerned as a pet owner
how did this happen what is being done to make our beloved pets safe what will happen to people who have done this to our pets
I had read that the pet food contaiminaion may have started a while ago and that the effects were cumulative. So, how long after eating the poisoned food do the animals begin showing symptoms???
What's really scary about this horrible story is that authorities are discovering contamination in new sources (brands, that is) every few days. Just when you think that the food you're serving your pet seems safe, another list comes out. Frightening.
The REAL problem in this country is that there is NO respect for animals and the functions they perform, especially dogs. If there was some type of poison is human food, I think you would see MUCH MORE ACTION to determine the cause.
Even the evening news programs haven't given this story the attention it deserves. It seems that they believe their lead story should be "Who is Anna Nicole Smith's baby's father?
The ASPCA and the Humane Society should DEMAND that they (the news media) supply more detailed information to the American public. Not EVERYONE has the luxury of being able to search the internet for their information.
It is now early May, and I am curious if there is any new information about HOW the contamination occurred and WHAT can be done to prevent further incidences.
I feel powerless and like us animal people should stick together and demand answers and higher standards.
I have graduated to cooking for my animals supplemented with high quality, organic, by product free pet foods. I hope this is good enough!
Ifeed my dogs kibbles & chunks and beneful. I can't find out if they have the listing on the affected poison in them. Can you tell me something about them. Are they safe. I mix them. Is that safe. Thanks Bev
