"Cat That Nearly Hit Passer-By Was Thrown"
By Bradley Hope

A Brooklyn man is facing a felony charge after he allegedly threw his cat out a third-story window last month, officials said yesterday.

Don Carter, 24, defenestrated the 6-pound cat, Midnight, on October 18 after she trespassed into a bedroom where she wasn't supposed to roam, officials said. Agents from the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals yesterday arrested Carter, who has a history of convictions for drug crimes.

He faces up to four years in prison on a charge of aggravated animal cruelty, a spokesman for the ASPCA, Joseph Pentangelo, said. Carter was also charged with reckless endangerment because the cat nearly hit a passer-by, he said.

Hi,

I hope he gets the full four years. A man was sentenced to 1 1/2 years suspended sentence in Maryland for throwing 4 kittens in a firepit after arguing with his girlfriend.
People can be so cruel.

I live in an apartment with three friends, and one of them bought us a kitten. We instantly fell in love with her, but the owner is growing increasingly mean to her. It is borderline cruelty, and it is getting worse and worse. She is just a kitten, but my roomate expects her to be a mellowed out, perfectly calm cat. When she is not, which is more often than not, my roomate becomes very aggravated and holds the cat so tight she can't move. She puts one hand over her face to clench her mouth shut, and holds her until she stops squirming. The cat cries and cries and cries, but that just further aggravates my roomate. Since it is the owner whose doing this, I don't feel that it's my place to say anything, and I just have to leave the room. What can I do?

To 12:46 am anonymous above: Get the kitten out of the apartment. Now. Since you aren't willing to confront your roomate about her cruelty, the best thing to do is remove the kitten from a worsening situation. Take her to a no-kill shelter, where she has a better chance at finding a loving, caring, non-abusive home. If you cannot find a no-kill shelter, try a veterinary practice or any local shelter; a kitten generally has a better chance at adoption than an adult cat. Get the kitten out of there now, before the situation worsens and you come home to a dead kitten. Do what is best for the animal, not your roomate or your relationship with your roomate. In fact, now that you've seen this side of her, you might want to reconsider your living situation.
