ASPCA in the News: Raise the Woof Tonight for Gimme Shelter!
New York Post: BEASTIE-REALITY
Ad-Rock and Other Local Luminaries Team Up to Save City Animals
October 4, 2006 -- The goal is to raise awareness - and hopefully some money - to turn all of New York City's animal shelters into no-kill operations by 2010. Sponsored by the ASPCA and the volunteer artist collaborative Rational Animal, the show “should make for an interesting night,” promises Beastie Adam (“Ad-Rock”) Horovitz.
“I'm just a dog guy,” explains Horovitz, seated alongside his canine sidekick, Roberta “Bobbi” Peterson, a mixed breed he rescued from a shelter in April 2005, when she was roughly three years old.
Along with his now decades-old band, Horovitz has become something of a do-gooder, speaking out against war, religious persecution and, now, the inhumane treatment of animals.

============== Title: ============== What are the rules please? With 6 pit-bulls, who are "suppossedly friendly", but have proven otherwise, I am scared walking my 3 dogs at all. Children?
6 pit bulls on 1 block with many children walking to school, kept in trailer,
attacked my dog for no apparent reason while walking with very young
children, Westland Michigan doesn't seem to check /care. was told they
would be muzzled.; SMALL GAT
============== Question: ==============
there seems to be more and more pit bulls in our neighbourhood and our street.
while walking with 2 young children who were just calmly walking while my
husband and I were with them, a pit bull pushed through the gate, while the 14
year old was walking her. The bull proceeded to sink his teeth deeply into the
neck of my dog and flailed it like it was a rag doll. The child seemed to go
into shock and kept apologising although; he will never be the same as other
children refuse to pass that corner with themselves and their dogs. I keep
having bad dreams. the dog was rushed to emergency. The owner was outside
watching all of this, but did nothing. The dog catcher placed the blame on me
and was very rude. The chief of Police said the woman had to go to court
because of a rule called a dangerous dog act., yet changed his mind the next
day and was very angry at me, denied he ever said that the previous day. The
mayor Cicirellii never returned my calls, and no one helped. Since, I have
made up with the woman because her husband recently died. I love dogs--anyone
will tell you that,
Now, there is 2 pit (no collar or muzzle) living a few doors down and in
a trailer alongside a house. I was assured that they would be leaving (the
ones living in the trailer) a couple of weeks ago, but all are still there.
The owners in the trailer appear young. Again, they come rushing to the gate,
whenever I pass by with my dogs, the owners grab them right away. I think
they know they are wrong and the dogs would attack if given the moment to do
so.
Again, I am a dog lover and do not believe that the fault is of the dog.
BUT THE OWNERS THEMSELVES.
Then there is another pit-bull across the street, few doors down. It is very
scary and again, an accident waiting to happen.
Please tell me what are the rules when it applies to pit-bull. I still feel
that it is the owner who is at fault, along with Mayor Cockerels, the dog
catcher, the police and this city for taking such dangerous chances. It seems
like no one cares about the young children who walk to school every day. And
when one walks 3 dogs, who are legally tagged, WHICH ONE DO YOU SAVE WHEN A
PIT BULL ATTACKS???
Perhaps, if my dog or young child would have been killed by that first pit
bull, it would have opened up some eyes and the mayor or dog catcher would
have done something.
IT IS A SHAME, AND YOU ALL OUGHT TO BE ASHAMED TO HAVE YOUR CITIZENS NOT FEEL
SAFE SIMPLY WALKING. Instead, we have to carry items to try and save
ourselves and our pet children. Shame on you.
I even called "Ruth to the rescue" and she reiterated exactly my thoughts on
this issue and could not believe that no one in this city would help me.
All I asked for was a high fence, locked and to feel safe. I never asked for
the dog to be put to sleep because ALWAYS, IT IS THE OWNERS FAULT. NOT THE
DOG....
Unfortunately, Mayor Ciccirelli has no shame in RUNNING FOR MAYOR.
HER PAST MOTTO"
WESTLAND, THE PLACE TO BE !!!!!
I AM AMAZED MICHIGAN HAS NO LAWS AGAINST THEM YET, ALTHOUGH IT IS DISCRIMINATION, THERE SHOULD BE PROTECTION. WE HAD A NEIGHBOR WHO HAD A NASTY PIT RUNNING LOOSE AND TURNED ON SOMEONE DOWN THE STREET A MONTH OR SO AGO AND THEY FINALLY CALLED THE POLICE AND THEY HAVE NEVER LET THEIR DOGS LOOSE AGAIN...DON'T EVEN KNOW IF THEY STILL HAVE THEM...NO ONE SHOULD HAVE LOOSE DOGS, OF ANY KIND...EVERY CITY I HAVE LIVED IN HAS LEASH LAWS AND THEY ENFORCE THEM, EVEN IN IDAHO THEY DID...ESPECIALLY PITS...THERE ARE ALOT IN THIS AREA AND THE POOR DOGS AREN'T TO BLAME, IT IS THE STUPID OWNERS..
Pit bulls are not the problem. Ignorant people are the problem. When did we as people stop taking responsibility for being a pet owner. If you own a pet and it bites or mauls somebody, you should be held accountable. We are smarter than our pets and should prove this by responsible pet ownership.
Responsible pet ownership means spaying/neutering your pet and also not keeping it outside on a two foot chain as protection. 99% of fatal dog maulings come from one or both of these scenarios.
Unfortunately, criminals do not practice responsible pet ownership. I volunteer at a shelter in a city where pit bulls have been banned. We see more of this breed than ever after the ban. Truly, this ban has created a bigger problem because now every criminal wants one and treats it inhumanely, which causes fatal dog attacks.
To solve the problem once and for all, go after the criminals who own them as a weapon.
I agree with the fact that pitbulls aren't the problem, it is the owner. I had lived in Westland my whole life until I was in high school. Now I am the proud owner of a pitbull. She is the sweetest dog in the world and wouldn't ever hurt anything. When in Westland, we lived across the street from a school and we would let our 100+ lb rottweiler sit on the lawn unleashed and kids came by everyday and pet her. At the time, she was the "bully breed" dog. Banning pitbulls will do nothing to stop tragedies. Those who are irresponsible and own pitbulls without knowing how to control the dog, will break any laws banning them and therefore we do nothing but ban the good ones. My dog is in training to be a hospital therapy dog and if she were banned then she could no longer help the people she was meant to. For those who argue this is an agressive dog, listen to this: The National Canine Temperament Testing Association tested 122 breeds, and Pit Bulls placed the 4th highest with a 95% passing rate!
I do believe that you should be required to go through a training course with your pitbull because most people don't realize what they are getting in to. We didn't, I admit it. However, the people who rescued her mom and let us buy our puppy, interrogated us, made us go and get her fixed, and then required us to go to training classes with her. They even made us sign a contract saying we would do this. If this were required, and strict penalties were put in place for those who didn't follow, then I do believe that pits will come to be known as the gentle, caring, need-to-please dogs they truly are.
Punish the deed, not the breed.
