Action Needed: Help Stop Bill That's Bad for Birds!
Every year, millions of day-old baby chicks are mailed via the U.S. Postal Service by commercial hatcheries and cockfighting breeders. The chicks are literally packed in boxes and sent through the mail, without food or water, and with no concern for temperature extremes. This inhumane practice results in the deaths of countless baby birds every year.
After receiving complaints from various animal protection groups, the U.S. Postal Service adopted policy changes to help protect birds shipped in the mail. The new regulations require that the shipment of all live animals be coordinated through central offices to ensure their arrival and limit the length of time the animals can be in transit via ground transportation.
In response to the new regulations adopted by the U.S. Postal Service, Senator Charles Grassley has introduced S. 2395, which would remove the Postal Service’s authority to implement the new regulations and force it to accommodate the baby bird and cockfighting industries. S. 2395 would provide that the Postal Service require certain airlines to transport birds, require those airlines to transport the birds through connecting cities, not necessarily direct flights, and require those airlines to transport birds in any temperature conditions between 0 and 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
If passed, this bill will undoubtedly lead to unnecessary suffering for millions of baby birds. Contact your Senators now and urge them to oppose S. 2395! Take action now!

I just have to say this really digusts and frightens me. 1. that this happens at all, and more importantly, 2. that a US Senator would support this.
This made me cry, I began my childhood on a farm, at four my job was getting the breakfast eggs from the chickens. I had a terrier at my side because of the rooseter who always attempted to nip me. Neither I nor my dog ever hurt a chick, there were over fifty chirping around my feet...I drag my feet to walk fearing if I lifted them I would hurt one...of those lovely birds. All animal babies are cute.
i think it is very mean to put it in a box aspca groups should come up with an idea like put ateast some food and water in a bottle animals are like people too.
the reason for the bill, is to protect shipped animals. if the air carriers are not required to accept and send the shipment, the animals will be longer in transit, and that is damaging to them, no matter how much food or water is provided.
this bill also provides those who ship bees and queens with a fast and efficient way to move them. it has become difficult to schedule reliable bee shipments because of cargo restrictions with USPS.
bees are essential to pollination of crops. queens are raised in warmer climates and shipped to beekeepers around the country. without new queens, hives die out and crops die out.
please read the bill, before you buy the hype.
Last info I had is that the only bird that could be shipped via Postal Service is Button Quail. Everything else goes through the airlines.
I can't believe the public is falling for this. Jerk at those heart strings all you darn Activists! Hopefully the public will wake up soon and figure out what the heck is going on. It's an animal rights movement. This is just another attempt to stop the industry.
I am really finding this one humorous.
this is rediculous... why would you treat some poor inocent animal like this... WTF... I cant believe the senator supports this... omg...
DO SOMETHING... Animals have feelings 2...
I think what they are doing to the birds are horrible. Since the birds are getting hurt they should stop the maddness. I think they should put themself in the chicks shoes.
I think what they are doing to the chicks is horrible. It makes me sad to just think about what the birds are going through. I think that they should stop them because they are only thinking about their own self. They should put them self in the little baby chicks shoes and see how it feels to be treated that way because I know that I would not like to like to be treated that way at all. The last thing that I want to say is I feel for the cute little chicks (and all living things should be treated equaly)! :)
I have ordered baby chicks thru the mail for years and it has been the norm for decades. Baby chicks can survive for several days without food or water right after hatching, because of their yolk sacs. This is natural, because the setting hen will not let them leave the nest for several days to let all the eggs hatch.
I have had more chicks to die because of the mother hen stepping on them than have ever arrived dead in the mail. What's next with you people that think you know everything -we won't be allowed to set hens because of the danger they represent?
