Ask the APCC: Are Pomegranates Harmful to Dogs?

We have two pomegranates in our backyard, and they are dropping fruit like crazy. Are these harmful to our dog if she ingests the green skin and seeds?
—Jenny H.

While the ripe fruit of the pomegranate (Punica granatum) is considered to be edible by humans, various parts of the plant contain alkaloids and tannins, which can cause significant GI irritation and even central nervous system depression in pets, depending on the amount ingested. Therefore, we would recommend not allowing your dog to consume the fallen fruit or other parts of the plant.

Our dog has eaten Pomegranates and is experiencing GI and central nervous system problems. The vet has prescribed the following:
Tetracycline, Dexamthasone, Prednisone, and DSS (stool softener). Is there anything else we can do for him? He doesn't seem to be getting better. He is only 5 years old and is part of the family and we feel so bad that we can't help him more. Please help!

Thank you,

Please do not submit questions about medical problems on the ASPCA Blog. If you think your pet is sick, you should contact your veterinarian or the APCC’s 24-hour hotline at (888) 426-4435 immediately. Delay in seeking proper veterinary care can worsen an animal’s condition.

The posting of whether pomegranates are harmful to dogs is several years old. With the fruit and juice becoming so popular now, is there any up-to-date information? I'd love my dogs to get the beneficial antioxidants from pomegranates. Is it okay to feed the fruit and/or juice to my dogs?
