Annual Adoption Center Data
Download (.xls) the 2008 Statistical Table for the ASPCA, prepared for Maddie's Fund
- In 2008, the ASPCA placed over 3,260 animals into loving homes.
- A significant number of the animals entering the ASPCA Adoption Center were seized by the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement Division as a result of abuse or neglect; the ASPCA is the only organization charged with enforcement of animal cruelty laws in New York City's five boroughs. The ASPCA provides state-of-the art veterinary care and behavior modification programs for these animals in the hopes of rehabilitating them. Unfortunately, in some cases, the animals are damaged beyond repair and euthanasia is the only option.
- The ASPCA Adoption Center is forced to euthanize a small number of animals due to severe medical conditions that compromise the pet's quality of life, or serious behavioral conditions, such as aggression, that cannot be remediated by our training professionals.
- The ASPCA Adoption Center is forced to euthanize fewer than 7% of all animals in its care, which represents a euthanasia rate that is significantly lower than national averages.
- To combat the problem of pet homelessness in New York City's five boroughs, the ASPCA's Mobile Clinic & Outreach program provides free and low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination services to pets in underserved communities. In 2008, the Mobile Clinic Program spayed and neutered over 23,220 animals—a 63% increase over 2007, thereby impacting the problem of unwanted offspring and pet homelessness.
