1. What You Need in Order to Adopt

Thank you for considering adopting a companion animal from the ASPCA! Now that you feel you are ready to adopt, we want to find the right match for you. You are about to make an important commitment that should not be rushed into. Your new pet will be with you for years, and choosing him or her is a big decision. Please check out our adoption tips for more information.

When you are ready to visit the 92nd Street ASPCA Adoption Center, please bring the following to facilitate the adoption process:

  • Two forms of identification, one with your current address on it and one picture ID (A telephone, utility or cable television bill qualifies as one form. We will also accept a driver's license, passport, or student or work ID.)
  • You may be asked to provide one personal reference, reachable by phone
  • Dog adopters, we strongly encourage all members of your household to come to the Adoption Center to meet the new pet.  If you already have a dog at home, it's a great idea to bring him or her along as well, so that our expert behaviorists can help you find the dog who is best suited to your current dog.

If you have any questions, please call the Adoption Desk at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120.

The ASPCA Adoption Center offers you and your new animal companion the following benefits:

  • A certificate for free follow-up veterinary care and medical support at the ASPCA Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital, valued up to $250.
  • A leash and collar or pet carrier to help you bring your new companion animal home
  • Literature and information about animal behavior and what to expect from your new pet
  • Spay/neuter surgery, vaccinations, microchipping plus registration, FeLV/FIV testing for cats and heartworm testing for dogs, all included in the adoption fee

2. Download Applications

You can get a head start on the adoption process by downloading and printing a dog or cat adopter survey. Simply fill out the surveys and bring them to our Adoption Center staff when you visit the shelter. Surveys are also available at our offices.
