About Ava:

If ever there was a Pit Bull on a mission to prove the world wrong about the breed’s bad rap, it’s Ava. This seven-year-old sweetie thinks life is one big cuddle fest. Rescued by the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement in June of 2008, Ava arrived severely underweight and infested with ticks. Gradually nursed back to robust health by our veterinarians, behaviorists and adoptions staff, she is a favorite of everyone who meets her.

Ava needs special support because she was born deaf. It doesn’t affect her sunny mood though, and potential adopters shouldn’t be deterred by her hearing impairment. She has adapted by learning hand signals, and knows how to sit, lay down, shake, roll over and more! Her other senses are razor sharp and she really responds to training, especially if you have treats!

Ava don't give up!!

Submitted by Ava says at: November 20, 2009
I have begun to face the fact that I may or may not ever be adopted. If I am adopted, I don't want anyone to adopt me because they feel sorry for me, or that I am deaf, because I fear that they would come to resent me.I would love it if they adopted me because of me, accept me like I am. I realize that some adjustments would be made. I would love being a part of a family, not the central part, but a part that would make a family complete. If adoption is not in my future, I would like to be somewhere that I could give back to what's been given to me.I'm 7 going on 8. Hey...I still have a few years left and if I can't have a family,I would like to be somewhere so I could be a comfort and help for someone like the ASPCA did for me. I have a lot of friends here at ASPCA and made a lot of friends that come by the shelter and even on these pages. Thank you all for being a friend.

How many people said they are going to adopt her. Many people and it has never been done. She might be deaf but she still has a heart. Who out there has a heart with a little extra room for one for sweet thing. If you really want her you will not regret it.

Let's talk about foods to avoid feeding your pets. The nutrition experts have put together a list of the top toxic people foods to avoid feeding your pets.If you suspect your pet has eaten any of the foods, note how much was ingested and contact your veternarian or the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at (888)426-4435. All of you little kiddies and bigger kiddies take note of these okay? Very helpful. Chocolate, coffee, Caffeine contain substances found in cacao seeds. When ingested by pets, can cause vomiting and diarrhea, panting, excessive thirst and urination, hyperactivity, abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures and even death.Did you little kids take note of this? :)

these animals should not have to go thru this it is horeable

Submitted by Ava says at: November 17, 2009
Read the article and see what some of these dogs are doing now. Hmmmmmmm....seem like my ideas are not bad. These dogs are being trained to be used as service dogs, visit hospitals., etc. I believe that in the heart of every dog is something we all have and that is love. Love your pets? Give them a hug. :))

For G. Rains....Ava is outside, on a leash.:)

Submitted by g. rains at: November 16, 2009
If you want Ava to find a home - remove the first photo and replace with one without the pinch collar. Pinch collars denote a hard to control dog.

Submitted by Ava says at: November 16, 2009
Ya know, that program training dogs to be search dogs is a very good idea..hmmmm...what about taking some kids with problems and teaming them up with dogs to train them, care for them and get them ready for adoption. It would be good for the kids too.

Submitted by Ava says at: November 15, 2009
Why is it that experience is something you don't get until just after you need it? :)

Jilly, don't be so hard on people. We all are going through hard times right now.People have had to change courses in the middle of the stream. They have been forced to do things that they wouldn't have done. The economy is bad for everyone.A lot of people live in places where they can't have pets.In some places, I would not be welcome.Being a pit mix and deaf would probably scare people away from me. It hurts, but that's the way it is.Some are afraid of a committment. You think??? :))

Submitted by Jilly at: November 15, 2009
I hate how people all say they would adopt her. If you say it then you should do it. Dogs are like people, just because they are deaf doesn't mean they shouldn't be

Submitted by smoke at: November 15, 2009

Submitted by Ava says at: November 15, 2009
Thank you for the kind words, Brewster and Rupert. I think you're both are kind of special.:))

Little Marvel, no, it doesn't hurt to be deaf.It just means you have to learn to adjust. The behaviorests here, have been working with me, and training me to deal with it.I know hand signals and a lot more things. The strangest thing about having a handicap is the way people treat you and how they react to you. Some people thinks a handicap is a disease and if they touch you, they will want to wash their hands. It's just a handicap.I believe that most beople don't know how to treat you. It's their mindset and they will have to change it themselves. Think about it,Marvel. They are afraid that they wouldn't have the skills to be able to care for you. :))

Good for you Alex. You're never too young. What you can do for your pets is to make sure they have plenty of water and food.Ensure that they are safely in the yard where they can't get out.Your parents can help you if you ask. :))

We are all sadden by the death of Oreo. She was tortured by the hands of her owner and as a result of this, Oreo had to be put down. Please all of you little kids and not so little kids, help fight animal cruelty. There are many ways to do this.Learn the signs of animal cruelty. You can find out right here on the ASPCA site. Also get into programs that will stop Breed discrimination. This is very important.

Submitted by karen at: November 14, 2009
she looks just like my male pit mix..I think about her all the time too, and wonder if the two would get along well together, but i live in illinois and it would be an awful long and disappointing trip only to find out they didn't like each other. Come on people, there's got to be someone out there who can give this gorgeous creature a loving home!

Ava, thanks for replying. I'm not sure I understand your comment though.

Submitted by Ava says at: November 13, 2009
Holly I believe the best way to go is on line. :)) I live in Indiana and am very interested in adopting you. I would love to fill out an online application, provide my phone number, email address, and all the videos they want. If they're interested and think we'd be a good match, we could take some vacation time to come pick you up and give them the last peace-of-mind detail with our interaction with you.

Submitted by Holly at: November 13, 2009
P.S. (again) You would live INSIDE the house, unless we're not home. :D

Submitted by Holly at: November 13, 2009
Hello Ava!! I called the adoption number yesterday after I posted my comments. The person was very helpful and friendly, but unfortunately I was told that, because of the sheer volume of calls, no one returns phone calls (understandably). I hate that you have been without a permanent home for almost 10 months. I'm sure your temporary caregivers are looking out for your best interest, but I was just wondering...after 10 months, I would think they would be a little more accomodating to find you your forever home. I mean no disrespect, they're AWESOME people!! I live in Indiana and am very interested in adopting you. I would love to fill out an online application, provide my phone number, email address, and all the videos they want. If they're interested and think we'd be a good match, we could take some vacation time to come pick you up and give them the last peace-of-mind detail with our interaction with you. See what you can do, if you're interested in finding out more about our home. Like I mentioned in my message yesterday, we have: 19 acres / a heated and fanned kennel for when we're not home / 2 friendly dogs / no kids / & TONS of love. I guess some of that wasn't mentioned earlier, but most of it was. I want you to have the perfect home, wherever and with whomever that may be. Hang in there!

Hi Ava! I am moving to NYC with my dog (an american bulldog mix) and cat, and am going to come visit you in the beginning of december. Ive got a few questions though. are you spayed? How are you with kitties? Do you like them? And other dogs? Kennels? being home while i go to work? Just a few things id love to know. You deserve a good home and pending everyone getting along and an approved application id love to give you one. See you soon! Stay happy!

Submitted by Holly at: November 12, 2009
P.S. to my below comments. I'm quite aware of the fact that a deaf dog should be kept inside or, at a minimal, inside a fenced area...I'm wanting to know this for the absolute worse-case scenario AND because we have 19 acres and at some point hope our 2 dogs can stay within sight if we were to try and train them to walk with us without a leash. However, that might not be an option for Ava - don't know.

Submitted by Holly at: November 12, 2009
I've been wanting to get a playmate for my absolutely adorable bundle-of-joy Doberman, Bunker. His "sister" (shepherd mix)tolerates him, but he would LOVE someone as playful as Ava. Our dogs know some basics (come, sit, stay, down, howl-the doberman, & hide-and-seek), but when it comes to walks they have a mind of their own. At any rate...when my husband and I have talked about getting a 3rd dog, he says he wants our 2 dogs better trained (on a leash and not having to worry that if they got off the leash we'd never see them again) before adding a 3rd to the mix. Having said that, I would LOVE to have Ava. IF my husband agrees, there's only 3 things I would need to know: One a scale of 1 to 10 ("1" being horrible and "10" being absolutely perfect) 1. How well does she walk on a leash? Does she pull? 2. How well does she stay and come if let outside? (We have a kennel area, heated for the winter and fanned in the summer, for when we're at work, but would be interested in her ability to stay within sight if NOT on a leash). 3. We live in Indiana. Is there ANY way of meeting half way? I don't know what all will get posted online, so I'm not adding my email address just yet. I'll check back to see your response.

We all knew that a lot of people read these pages without reading all the articles on here at ASPCA. Our friends here have been working hard for all the animals. So we all wanted to help do our part. Before I forget, teach kids how to treat animals with love and respect. Support your local animal rescue organizations. In the meantime.....Stay safe. Unless there's a serious medical or behavior issue, the ASPCA's shelter doesn't put animals down. Still, I hope Ava finds a new home soon! She's been at the shelter so long... :(

Submitted by Helen at: November 2, 2009
Correct me if I am wrong...but isn't the ASPCA a no kill shelter? And if an animal is there for too long do you transport them to pounds where they would be put down?Or would you place them in a no kill shelter?

Submitted by Joy at: November 1, 2009
It seems like there is a question about Ava. She was born deaf, she is 7 years old.Breeders tend to put deaf dogs down because they think they will be unsalable.Shelters tend to put them down because they think that no one will want them. Potential adopters pass pass by deaf dogs in shelters because they worry they won't have the skills to care for them.Ava has come a long way from where she was. Wouldn't you agree? Some of you have written that you have met Ava and said what a great dog she is. I've only met her on these pages and I like her. There was a 14 year old boy that wrote on Ava's page and he said he related to Ava in that he had an affliction too and it tugged at my heart. Ava has learned hand signals, sit, shake, roll over and more. Please, if anyone is interested in adopting Ava, don't let her being deaf stand in the way. There are behavior therapists right there at the shelter that can help you with any questions or problems. Also to train with hand signals and other training.I don't believe it would be very much different than having a dog that can hear.Just a slight adjustment. From what I've read about Ava, she is one great dog and has the disposition to go with it.

Submitted by smoke at: November 1, 2009
such a beautiful pit. istill REALLY want her!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Submitted by Ava Lover at: November 1, 2009
I don't think you know what it is like to be stuck in the crate for years and years to pass. Maybe she is deaf but that shouldn't stop you from adopting her. She might be seven so you won't have her for as long as if you were to get a puppy but make her last years be the best she ever had.

Ava has been there at the shelter for a long time. She has watched so many people come by her cage and look and then go past. Yes, she is a 7 year old girl, she is deaf and in need of a home. She has adapted by learning hand signals and more.I am praying that she gets that home that she so richly deserves. She is so special and will be a blessing to whoever that adopts her.I pray that someone will give Ava that chance. Love you, Ava.

Doesn't the Aspca have animal assisted therapy classes? Wouldn't this be a good place for Ava? She would be doing a service for people in nursing homes, hospitals. If Ava can touch the hearts of people on these pages, just think how she will touch the hearts of people in those nursing homes and hospitals.Isn't there someway that this could work for her? Just think about it, please?

She is so beautiful. I wish I could adopt her, but I already have three dogs. :-(

Submitted by Alison at: October 30, 2009
She's a cutie, if she weren't cross country I'd go meet her but my lab is not always the most accepting. My other dog is almost completely deaf now and we do great on hand signals. She's a cutie!

Submitted by Joy at: October 30, 2009
For Dawn.... I was thinking along the same as you, possibly reaching out to Deaf organizations, Could it be possible that Ava could find her forever home this way.Why couldn't it work for Ava? She knows hand signals and a lot of other stuff. This is worth a try.If any one is interested in adopting Ava, please contact the adoption center, excuse me, Animal Placement center.Phone...212-876-7700 EXT..4120.The ASPCA also adopts out of state. This is for Ava to help find her forever home. She has been there at the shelter for so long and should be in a loving home by now.

Ava is so beautiful. I wish she was in Florida and I would surely adopt her. I have 2 7-year-old red nose pits that are brother and sister and they would just love her too!

Submitted by Dawn at: October 30, 2009
I don't know if anyone has mentioned this yet, but you might want to reach out to Deaf organizations, many times deaf people would like to specifically adopt a deaf cat or dog. This recommendation came to me from someone who has a deaf sister. Hope Ava finds her forever home soon!

I'm an ASPCA volunteer and had a chance to visit with Ava this weekend. I can say, without reservations, that she is a wonderful, lovable, and super-friendly dog. She is deaf, but why should that matter with her cute wiggle butt? And boy does it wiggle!

How is Ava with other dogs? I had 3 shelter dogs, now I only have one, (I had to put 2 down in the past 2 years and am heartbroken), Baby Bop, who is almost 12. She is a staffie and is the sweetest animal on the planet. I was going to adopt a 9 year old staffie from New ROchelle Huumane Society which my friend runs, but he got adopted a few weeks ago.

I just saw the date of the last comment and cannot believe that such a wonderful dog hasn't found a home. I have 3 dogs now although in the city, I am really only allowed to have 2. My one dog has plasma cell tumors and isn't expected to be with our pack much longer.... :-( The laws banning breeds and the landlords who don't allow dogs and the limits on number of dogs are laws that all need to be overturned. We need to become a more pet-friendly society. Please give Ava a big hug and kiss and tell her that someone in the Buckeye state sends her her love. I just wish the people who said that they were "coming to get her" actually did. It's hard to see any dog without a home; it's even harder when they have remained to be such wonderful dogs when they have had so many challenges. Best wishes, dear Ava. I will keep you in safe in my thoughts and hope that you find your forever family very soon.

Submitted by quinn at: October 7, 2009
i would love ava because i read that shes deaf and i have a disability so i could relate to ava. and we can go through our issues together but i cant get her because i live in an apartment. she would be good to have her so she and my dog jake together could really help me what im going through.if i had ava i would love her like i love jake so much and i would let her sleep on my bed and play with her and i would pet her and give her my pillows to sleep on and lots more. it breaks my heart to see all of these dogs in the aspca and not in loving homes.i would love to get jake a friend like ava.ava is special just like i am and jake is.if i was old enough to drive i would go there right now and adopt ava but im only 14.i would know how to take care of ava because i know sign language even though never had a deaf dog but when i saw avas picture i fell right in love with her i want to adopt her so bad im a animal lover. i wish i could adopt every animal in your shelter. hope you find a very loving home ava and to all of the other pets. good luck. whoevers on this website have a giving heart and give any animals here a loving home they dont deserve to suffer not having a loving home so whoever reads this go adopt a animal at a shelter if you can.please

Submitted by Anonymous at: October 7, 2009
I can't believe this dog is still here! What a sweetie pie! Unfortunately, I am unable to adopt a dog at the present time, but I have been checking the ASPCA website periodically for months in hopes of seeing her adopted. She is clearly a loving, playful animal who should by all rights be in a fabulous home -- and yet her beautiful face is still at the top of the adoptions list! Why? Someone, please, please adopt Ava!

Submitted by Gee at: October 6, 2009
The ASPCA does out-of-state adoptions! If anyone is interested in adopting her, call the adoptions desk and find out the best way to meet her and make sure she's the dog for you. I adore Ava and have rubbed her belly, and nothing could make a pet parent happier. (I have two cats, though, and that would not go over well for either the cats or Ava!)

Hey, I'm just looking (I'm in Tennessee)...I just have to say your website is stellar! Excellent advertising for great dogs! I WISH that I could see the same brilliant dog "marketing" strategies applied in full force at animal adoption agencies across the U.S.A. Eva is just GORGEOUS! Hard to believe that she was once neglected. She's tempting me to ask about out of state adoptions :-)

I hope that out of all the comments made on here about adopting her that someone will actually make the move and go adopt Ava. And who cares if she's deaf she seems like such a wonderful, loving dog. If I didn't already have a big dog in my rather small NYC studio I'd go get her in a heartbeat. It's ONLY $75 to $200 for dogs (smaller and younger dogs have higher adoption fees). Ava would most likely only be $75 which is a VERY SMALL price to pay for such an awesome dog.

I work as a volunteer at the ASPCA and I have to say that Ava is one of the sweetest, most amazing dogs. I did not really understand the pit breed until I started working here and Ava was one of the first that I met and totally changed my mind. EVERYONE here loves her and are just waiting with baited breath for her to find her forever home. She's had a rough life - it's time for her to find the loving home she so deserves. If you are interested, please come see her - you won't be disappointed.

Karl, there are articles on the ASPCA site that tells about dog fighting. These dogs get a bad rap because some people abuse them, abuse them to make them fight. Just read the articles. I have a Stafford mix that I wouldn't take a million dollars for. He gets along with my other dogs as well as the cats. If you can, get acquainted with some pits. They will surprise you. :))

I'm conferring with my boyfriend. I would love to have AVA. I've had a pit mix in the past and he was a fabulous dog. Very smart. I've used hand commands on all my dogs, so Ava being deaf would be no problem. I'm just wondering how she is with other dogs and cats?

Ava is smart, friendly, pretty, knows a lot of sign language her other senses are pretty sharp too. I know that's not all of her good points.Ava is 7 years old, a pit bull mix and deaf. She has been there for such a long time and has seen people come by and make a comment and go on.She still waits for that one person or family to love her and take her home. She will be a great addition to the right people. :-)))

Marci....don't feel sorry for Ava.She doesn't know she's deaf.An animal can sense these things when they are around us.They can sense fear, anxiety,if we feel sorry for them.Feeling sorry for an animal isn't why they should be adopted. That would be for the wrong reason. She need someone to love her and accept her the way she is. She is going to be a good dog for someone. :-))

I agree with Joy. Don't worry guys, ASPCA won't give away these dogs to just any stranger.

Submitted by Joy at: August 16, 2009
Now don't you folks feel sorry for Ava. I don't believe she knows that she is deaf. What does that matter anyway? She's still in need of a home and someone to love her. It's to my understanding that she knows some hand signals and what she doesn't know now, she will learn if given a chance. The ASPCA is very careful where they place the animals. They want to make sure that they will be taken care of.But I hope that no one is deterred because she is deaf. She will need some support and more training, but in all, I firmly believe that she will make a great addition to a family and will give love as she receives love. Miss Ava.... you're a good girl!! :-))

When you visit the ASPCA and speak with the adoptions counselors they will be able to answer any of your questions and address you concerns. If they don't have the answer immediately they will seek it out. If you have another animal in the home they will be able to let you know how they will interact. Hi, I like Ava, she looks so sweet and friendly. My partner and I live nearby and would love to come and see her. The only concern is how she will get along with our 11 year old Steven the cat. Please give us some advice. I know that pit bulls are often even kill cats. Is that safe to have the cat and Ava in the same appartment and what are the chances they will become friends? Thank you so much, Yelena

Meg, I don't know if anyone has responded directly to you yet, but in case not, you don't have to live in NY State to adopt Ava, though you may have to come to NYC to meet her at the shelter. You can call the Adoption desk at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4120 to find out more about the process from out of state. I can say without reservation that she's a lovely, lovely dog. Good luck!

Submitted by joymjb at: July 11, 2009
If the right people adopted her, they could teach it sign language. I was watching a program and the dog was deaf. The people that adopted her knew sign language and taught her. Probably took a little time and patience. But to them, it was worth it. Ava is worth it too.

Submitted by Tim at: July 11, 2009
Does she do well with cats?

Submitted by ASPCA GIRL at: July 11, 2009
SOMEONE JUST PLEASE ADOPT HER!!! SHE IS SO CUTE!!!!! IT DOSNT MATTER SHE IS DEAF!! DEAF DOGS CAN BE TRAINED! SO SOMEBODY SHOULD SNATCH THIS BABY UP BEFORE IT IS TOO LATE! I LOVE HER!!

Submitted by Christine at: July 10, 2009
My family and I had the opportunity of mtg beautiful Ava back in December. I remember looking into her eyes and felt an instant bond. I wish we could have adopted her then as she is truly a sweetheart but w/ our 2x little girls (ages 1 & 5) they did not recommend it mainly because of her being deaf. I do however think that she would made a "wonderful" addition to a family w/ older children, a couple or single person.....it breaks mine and my older daughter's heart when we see that she is still up for adoption.

Submitted by ... at: July 9, 2009
too cute! i want her but yet can't get her :(

Submitted by Meg at: July 8, 2009
It's all in how you raise a dog as to what kind of temperament they'll have. I find it so terribly sad that people disregard an animal because of their 'reputation' built by inhumane CRIMINALS. I 'adopted' a rotty that was afraid of her own shadow, but with time she became more confident and quite the lil' lady! Somebody mentioned that she was adopted, but later returned. Is that correct :( ? I don't understand why she's not been given the lifestyle that she deserves. Is it the stigma attached to the breed that turns people off? Or her hearing impediment? Most importantly, are there any rules that prevent folks out-of-state from adopting her?!

Submitted by Jersey at: July 8, 2009
She has been here for almost a whole year! i wish someone i wish will adopt her. My mother doesn't want a pit bull so i can't get her :((

Submitted by ashley at: July 8, 2009
she has been her so long i hope someone will adopt

Submitted by Meg at: July 8, 2009
Awww! Is Ava still adoptable and can she be adopted by someone who doesn't live in NY?! I have two 13 y/o labs and both are deaf, but it doesn't matter! They've been taught hand signals and facial expressions :) It simply makes them more unique!!! So, they spend their days eating treats, swimming in an 8 acre lake, roaming 5 acres, and just being spoiled rotten with all of the attention they can handle!!!

Submitted by Morgan at: July 8, 2009

I have a dog indentical to her. Ava is an American Bulldog/Boxer Mix. I saw where someone mentioned it was a Dogo Argentino but with all the spots on Ava, Argentino's don't develop that many spots. Hope without the Pitbull in her, she will be more easily adoptable.

I've been looking at Ava for a long time and I, too, wonder that such a loving, friendly, good kisser of a dog has not yet found a loving home. I recently adopted a dog from your shelter and we are having a great time getting acquainted. I also have 6 cats, all of whom I found out in the wild and brought in. Feral cats are the best, don't let anyone tell you differently. I would love to adopt Ava and if I lose my other dog, who is getting quite old, I will be racing back for Ava. If you are thinking you might like Ava, you'd better hurry up before I get her.

I would love to have this dog but were I live it would be hard to have such a playful dog.

Hi, Kaylin! We're located at 424 East 92nd Street, between 1st and York Avenues in New York City. If you don't live near our shelter, check out the ASPCA's Shelter Database to find a shelter closer to where you live: http://www.aspca.org/findashelter
