Tampa became an ASPCA partner community in 2007. It was chosen because its animal welfare organizations have a strong history of working together to help end pet overpopulation in Tampa. Our partner agencies continue to collaborate on initiatives like finding families for Tampa’s homeless animals, providing spay/neuter services to the community and increasing feral cat trap-neuter-return.
Tampa’s three partners include the municipal shelter, Hillsborough County Animal Services (HCAS); a limited intake shelter, the Humane Society of Tampa Bay (HSTB); and a coalition of animal groups that aims to end unnecessary euthanasia in Tampa, No More Homeless Pets in Hillsborough County.
Hillsborough County Animal Services
Tampa’s county-run animal control facility, Hillsborough County Animal Services (HCAS)
picks up and shelters stray or injured animals, enforces local ordinances and laws, issues rabies tags, investigates cruelty, adopts out animals, returns animals to their families, runs a foster program and runs humane education and spay/neuter voucher programs.
Humane Society of Tampa Bay
Established in 1912, HSTB is a limited admissions facility. Its programs include: adoptions, spay/neuter and microchipping clinics, a wellness clinic, community outreach, community pet food pantry, pet food delivery service to the housebound, animal foster care and volunteer programs, and trap-neuter-return resources.
No More Homeless Pets in Hillsborough County
This coalition of animal welfare groups in the Tampa area aims to end euthanasia as a means of population control. Its Tampa Pet Adoption Expo is a huge success yearly; in 2010 the Expo resulted in the adoption of 455 pets. It focuses on bringing the Tampa community together and providing information on spay/neuter and feral cat resources.
