Spay Day USA 2008

Tampa Inspires Pet Parents To Take A Snip!

On Tuesday, February 26-Spay Day USA-the staff of Hillsborough County Animal Services (HCAS) inspired their animal-loving community to "Reach Out & Snip Someone!" The Snip Squad spent the day in downtown Tampa at Hillsborough County's main government building, County Center, handing out thousands of flyers and brochures on the importance of spay/neuter and the programs available. Pet parents of all income levels were offered Spay Day specials on surgeries from ASPCA® Mission: Orange™ partners, and those on public assistance were offered spay/neuter vouchers.

Not surprisingly, the event’s mascots stole the show. Oso the chow mix, Sierra the Anatolian shepherd (who found a new adopter during the event), and JD the border collie (owned by the ASPCA's Ellen Taylor, Community Initiative Manager, National Outreach) charmed one and all. There was lots of media coverage as well, from leading news/talk radio station WFLA AM and its sister station, WMTX FM, as well as the popular Hispanic station, WQBN radio.

“A big thank you to everyone for supporting Spay Day USA 2008,” says Marti Ryan, Community & Media Relations, HCAS. “The Snip Squad did outstanding work, reaching a cross section of law enforcement officers, civil servants, working professionals and others who stopped by the County Center government building to conduct business.”
