Richland, S.C.—The Richland County Sheriff’s Department (RCSD) received a $10,000 grant from the ASPCA® (American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals®) to purchase specialized equipment to investigate animal cruelty and neglect cases. The grant will help the RCSD protect animals in need in Richland County.

“The well-being of animals and the prosecution of those responsible for their abuse are imperative,” stated Sheriff Leon Lott. “Animals need someone to take up the fight on their behalf. Maintaining a high quality of life in our communities is the corner stone of the Richland County Sheriff’s Department and taking a stand against anyone who would threaten our communities and citizens is our main priority. We thank the ASPCA for their support and compassion for animals.”

In 2013, the RCSD responded to 23 animal abuse incidents, including animal fighting and neglect cases. This ASPCA grant will help the RCSD efficiently respond to future cases by providing investigators with equipment including animal first-aid kits, cameras to document evidence, dog crates, leashes and other supplies.

“We hope this grant will better safeguard the quality of life for animals in Richland County,” said Matt Stern, director of ASPCA Anti-Cruelty Group Operations. “We commend the Richland County Sheriff’s Department for devoting time and resources to investigate crimes against animals, and are proud to supply funds to further these efforts.”
