Deciding to Adopt a New Pet
-
I’ve had three dogs, ages four, six and seven years old, from the time they were babies. Since catsitting a friend’s kitten for the last nine months, I’ve been thinking about adopting a kitten or young cat. My daughter, who lives with me, doesn’t think it’s a good idea. She admits I take good care of my dogs, but she thinks I have too many pets in one house. I don’t know whether I should go ahead and adopt a kitten or not.

Elissa, your situation is complicated. On the one hand, you have room in your heart for another animal, but you’re already sharing your home with your daughter, and her feelings need to be taken into account.
I suggest you keep talking with her about the adoption of another pet. Try to get a good understanding of her concerns. Perhaps she feels she might have to be responsible for all of your pets if you can no longer care for them.
It’s also important to know that a new kitten may have trouble entering a household with three dogs.
Good luck, Elissa. I’m glad you have such warm communication with your three dogs.
