Why Do Horses Splash?

Why do my three horses all like to splash in our pond with their front feet? They do it in the fall, too, so they’re not doing it to cool off. Our cats do this with their water in the house, but I had thought that was due to being far-sighted and trying to figure out where the top of the water lay. These horses do this for 10 minutes at a time! Is it merely play behavior? Thanks very much indeed.

Carol, it is likely play behavior; however, many horses paw the water with their front feet prior to rolling.
