Mare Traumatized from Being Bred?
-
I recently bred my 13-year-old mare. A couple of weeks ago I got on her bareback, and she took off and started bucking. I then tried her with a saddle and she was perfectly fine. I have ridden her bareback prior to the breeding and she never acted out. It was her first time being bred, and she had to be backed up to a low fence for the stud to mount her. Can a traumatizing breeding experience cause a mare to buck while being ridden bareback?

Shayna, it is more likely that the saddle is protecting some area of her back that is bothering her. When you ride bareback, there are different areas on your horse’s back where pressure is applied. I would suggest you have your vet give your mare's back, hips and shoulders a thorough exam.
