Mare Banned from Herd

I have four horses on 17 acres. My alpha mare seems to have been banned from the herd. When she is in one part of the field, the other three horses are in another. This is new behavior I have seen only this week. These horses have been together for years. Why would my alpha mare have been banned?

Kelly, I would not jump to the conclusion that she has been banned. My first recommendation is to have your vet conduct a thorough exam. Whenever there is a dramatic behavior change, we need to rule out medical causes first. I would put my money on her having some physical issue that is making her uncomfortable and causing her to choose to stay away from the herd.
