Kicking, Biting, and Bucking

Hi, Dr. Weiss. I have a 2-year-old quarter horse who, now that he’s gelded, loves to kick and bite and buck. He never did this when he was a stallion. What should I do?

Micail, I doubt the behavior has anything to do with him being gelded, but instead has to do with being a 2-year-old! It is not unusual for a 2-year-old to start behaving a bit rambunctiously. Kicking, biting and bucking are all herd appropriate behaviors—your horse may simply be “trying on” some herd behaviors and testing his likely position in the herd.
