Creepy Horse Glances

My 17-year-old quarter horse mare has a habit of turning her head around and looking at me while we are on a ride. At first it creeped me out, but then she stopped doing it for the most part. My friend has a 7-year-old quarter horse mare who does the same thing to her. We both feel they are trying to communicate with us, but we don't know what the messages are. Are we both imagining this? Is there an explanation for this behavior? Is this a quarter horse thing?

Whenever I get a “why does my horse (or dog, cat, bear, turtle…) do that,” my response is the same…because it feels good! (Or at least, better than other options!) The behavior of head-turning in your friend’s horse is being reinforced somehow. It may be that your friend pats her head sometimes, or smiles, or maybe even just removes the pressure on the reins. You noted that your horse stopped doing the behavior, which indicates that it was no longer being reinforced.
