Broken Legs

Why do horses get put to sleep if they break a leg? Can’t the leg be put in a sling?

- Stephen

Not all breaks result in euthanasia. In some cases, with a lot of time, effort and expense, a horse can recover from a broken bone in the leg. However, horses are built differently than you and I. They need to stand and move to digest well, making convalescence more of a challenge. Further, they need to have excellent blood flow into the hoof in order to keep the foot healthy. A broken leg often leads to decreased blood flow, making recovery more difficult. And finally, even with the very best care that money can buy, there is a very high risk of infection.
