Boredom

My horse seems bored in his stall and pasture. Is there anything I can do to help him?

- Melissa

Absolutely, Melissa! First, we’ll need to address his social needs. Horses are very social animals, and spend most of their lives living in herds in the wild. Does your horse have other horses to interact with? If this is not possible, please think about getting him a buddy such a goat, donkey or other pal. Check your local shelter to see if there are any "horse buddies" in need of homes.

Next, we want to do our best to stimulate his natural environment. Horses spend much of their day foraging, nibbling and moving from place to place. Spreading his hay into smaller piles is a good start, as is hanging some special treat from above. My horses love to bob for apples out of their water tubs, and spend hours rolling a small barrel that has a hole on the side for a few treats to fall out. Be creative—and good luck!
