On Friday, December 10, a seminar was held in Jackson, Ohio, to clarify the responsibilities and practices of municipal authorities in animal cruelty investigations.
Linda Gilliam, the Chief Humane Agent for Pike County, was one of the guest speakers and centered her talk on how to preserve evidence in potential animal cruelty cases, according to the Jackson County Times-Journal.
Gilliam also talked about the importance of ensuring that all procedures are properly followed and that all information is recorded accurately.
"Getting the correct road number and road name is very important," Gilliam stated, reports the news source. "The wrong address can be fatal to the case."
Being diligent will ensure that those accused of animal cruelty do not get off on a technicality, Gilliam said.
Jackson County Prosecutor Jonathan Blanton also spoke during the meeting and focused on the importance of being accurate and thorough when filling out affidavits.
"Without a good affidavit, the case is doomed from the beginning," he said.
Several members of the Humane Society of Jackson County were present at the meeting. According to its website, the organization's goal "is to prevent neglect, cruelty and exploitation of animals."
