On Saturday, October 16, guests at the Living Free animal sanctuary in Idyllwild, California, had a chance to tour the property and enjoy a long list of activities throughout the day, all for the sake of helping pets in need of homes, according to The Press-Enterprise.
Fritz Coleman, a weatherman for KNBC-TV and KNSD-TV, was the keynote speaker for the ceremonies, and also starred in a comedy performance later that night at a local restaurant, with all the proceeds going toward the sanctuary.
There was also a chance for children to carve pumpkins and have their faces painted, and tractors gave rides to families in the afternoon.
Emily Worthington, who works at the facility, emphasized the need for a support system for animals without homes.
"People don't understand the care dogs need—it's not just physical, but emotional," she told the news provider. "We try to find families for the dogs, not dogs for families."
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals states that donations are important to local shelters. By donating pet supplies, toys or volunteering for a few hours a week, individuals can make a significant difference in the lives of homeless pets.
