California Man Denies Beating Girlfriend’s Dogs to Death

dog A 25-year-old man pleaded not guilty May 9 to beating his girlfriend’s three dogs to death, the Los Angeles Times reports. San Diego authorities say Patrick Caleb Land’s DNA was found under the nail of one of the dogs.

Land faces three felony animal cruelty charges in the case, which alleges he beat one dog to death in September and two in October. Were he convicted on all counts, he would face four years and four months in prison. Land was arrested in North Carolina and extradited to California to face charges, the newspaper reports.

The dogs Land is accused of killing were Jackie, a nine-year old white shepherd mix; Pikanik, a four-year old black-and-tan mixed breed; and Josh, a Great Pyrenees and Golden Retriever mix.
