ASPCA Pet of the Week: Duncan Donut
There's nothing like the holidays to bring out the childlike spirit in all of us. Tentative tot Duncan is a sweet young thing who surely does the job—at one year old, he is mouthwateringly cute and ready for a home for the holidays. Duncan first came to the ASPCA from Tennessee in September, and has spent the past few months getting adjusted to urban life.
"Duncan is very shy and loves to play with toys, once he's comfortable, that is," says Marny Nofi, ASPCA Behavior Coordinator. "With time, he has formed bonds with individual people, but he does not do well in crowds. He needs a quiet adult home—one where there isn't too much activity or people coming and going."
A Terrier mix, Duncan will thrive best in a home without other dogs or children and with an experienced adopter who will work with him on basic housetraining. He is currently taking anti-anxiety medication, and his future pet parent should be committed to continuing this course of treatment. ASPCA Happy Tails: Sweet ‘n’ Salty
Earlier this year, when Kim Moore of Manhattan was surfing the ASPCA website, she became intrigued by a fetching feline named Cora. The 2-year-old Tabby is a gorgeous, mellow lass who has one extra-distinguishing feature—the iris of her left eye is a slightly different size and shape than her right iris. Kim thought it made the young cat unique and compelling.
Soon after, Kim visited the ASPCA Adoption Center to meet Cora and some other cats looking for homes. “I remember walking by Cora's habitat and thinking, ‘Oh, that's the cat with the funny eye!’” laughs Kim. “She was very shy and just hid in her bed—unfortunately, she wasn't too keen on meeting me.”
But Cora’s reserve didn’t put off the determined potential pet parent. Says Kim: “I didn’t end up adopting a kitty that day, but came back two weeks later to try my luck again—Cora was still very shy but sweet. When I picked her up, she burrowed her head in the crook of my arm like a little bunny, and I decided to adopt her.”
Since that fateful day, Kim and Cora—now named Salty for her “salt-and-pepper” markings—have officially bonded. According to Kim, it took about a month for the introverted kitty—who was deemed a Private Investigator by our behaviorists—to fully emerge from her shell. “The first couple of weeks she camped out in the bathroom and was more than content to stay there with a few brief excursions to the kitchen for exploration,” Kim explains. “Now I can't believe what a spunky, sassy, energetic, playful kitty is inside of her! She is full of personality and is non-stop rolling around on the floor, stalking toys and chasing her tail. She even sleeps on my bed with me at night.”
She adds: “Some advice to potential adopters—don't overlook the Private Investigators! They might just need some time to warm up, but once they do, look out! Salty is so much fun and cracks me up every day.”
The beaming new pet parent is even considering returning to the ASPCA Adoption Center to find a friend for Salty. Here’s hoping she meets another fun-loving sweetheart to warm her days and brighten her nights.
“I'm so happy to have Salty in my life,” Kim says. “I love coming home to a warm, fuzzy kitty, full of chirps and purrs.”

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Queen for a Day
Looking for a regal bee? Meet Queenie—she’s a 9-year-old lassie who’s extra friendly and lovable. Her get-along personality and even temperament make her an ideal match for someone looking for a sweet sidekick.
“Queenie has two tricks that she performs,” says Barbara MacDonald, ASPCA Volunteer Coordinator. “She jumps on your shoulder when you open her habitat door, and then she wants to sit on your lap on the floor. Her behavioral repertoire never varies!”

ASPCA Pet of the Week: Gentle Giant
Ready to make a commitment to a good-lookin’ cookie? Andre is an energetic, two-year-old Shepherd mix who was recently brought to our shelter when his pet parent was transferred by the U.S. Marines. A get-along dog, he still has his puppy spirit, and loves to run, leap, fetch, receive belly rubs and practice learning basic manners, especially when he’s rewarded with tasty treats.
Andre will likely thrive best in a single-dog household, and—because of his size—with older kids. He is a whole lotta pooch, but definitely a heartbreaker who will make an exceptional addition to any family with time, patience and a little bit of running room.

ASPCA Happy Tails: Molly, Stay Forever Young!
Everybody remembers Sassy—the saucy Beagle whose youthful exuberance disguised her true age. We’re happy to report that the popular pooch (now known as Molly) is happily living with Bronx, NY, resident Floree Jackson and her loving family. On September 19, the day after Floree’s 26th birthday, the demonstrative canine became the missing puzzle piece for the Jacksons’ growing family. Now eight years old, Molly has a new name and a new lease on life. We recently caught up with the family matriarch and her fun-loving fur kid.
“Molly’s doing great!” Floree enthuses. “She has claimed the love seat by the front window as her own—she is really laid back, and gets along great with my kids.”
It seems Molly is finally enjoying the quiet wisdom—and the joy of napping—that comes with middle age. “She likes to sleep on her back on any pillow or pile of clothes!” Floree reports.
But don’t be fooled—Molly hasn’t totally left her puppy ways behind. Just as this former wiggle worm gets used to her new two-legged parents and siblings, so, too, is Floree adjusting to the unique habits of the canine kind. She says, “Molly is my first dog, so it’s funny to see her sniff in circles before she goes to the bathroom. She is definitely getting accustomed to my work schedule and wakes up with my alarm clock.”
“Molly is a wonderful addition to the family,” Floree adds. “She is a great pet for my children and fits right in. She’s made us the ‘typical family’—mom, dad, kids and a beautiful Beagle—who could ask for anything better?”

ASPCA Happy Tails: We Are Family
In April 2007, shortly after they received the keys to their first apartment in New York City, Lisa and John Bolender decided their first order of business was to adopt a dog. The young couple made a beeline for the ASPCA Adoption Center in Manhattan, where they met a special, one-year-old Cane Corso named Aniya, who also goes by the nickname Niya.
“She put her paw up against the glass when I came near, and we knew we had to meet her,” Lisa says. “The first night in our place in New York was spent with Niya curled up with us on a pile of blankets and pillows. She has been devoted to us ever since.”
Eventually, the little family moved back to their home state of Michigan, where they decided to expand their brood. “Niya wanted to play with every dog and person she came across, from sun up to sun down,” explains Lisa. “So John went to the Livingston County Humane Society and adopted Brutis, another Cane Corso, about four months younger than Niya.”
Now the two pooches are best buddies. Says Lisa: “Niya will plop herself down on Brutis' head or back her rear end into his side at least once an hour to get him to play. They run around and follow us from room to room, always jumping on each other.”
But the family didn’t stop there—in March 2008, Lisa and John welcomed a daughter, Ava, into their furry world. “Niya was wonderful with Ava from the start,” Lisa muses. “She even sleeps in Ava's room at night by her bed. Every time Ava wakes up, Niya is the first one she looks for.”
This fun-loving, loyal pooch has settled into life as a big sister and canine matriarch with ease. “She shakes her entire rear end when she is happy, to make up for the lack of a long tail,” Lisa laughs. “She also likes to ‘talk’ to us when she wants to play or just wants attention, and never ceases to get excited to see us when we walk through the door.”
She adds: “Niya is very special to us. She is an essential part of our every day. She makes us laugh and is Ava's best friend. I am so happy that we walked into the ASPCA that day.”

ASPCA Happy Tails: A Home of One’s Own
Our loyal readers will remember the fab five poodles who charmed us last year. They were the special pups who needed extra TLC after being rescued—along with nearly 30 other dogs—from a home in Queens, NY. All of these fortunate pooches were adopted, and we recently caught up with the new parent of the fab five’s lone lady, Bonnie. The eight-year-old was beloved at the ASPCA for her affection for other small dogs and calm, collected humans. Now she has a quiet home to call her own.
“My daughter and I first met Bonnie when we visited the ASPCA hoping to get a cat,” explains Patrice Mattia of Manhattan. “We did in fact have a cat in mind who we had seen on the website, but as it turned out, she wasn’t a match for us. My daughter, who had been looking at the dogs, said, ‘What about the little poodle?’ We were able to meet Bonnie that day, and thought she was adorable. I went back the next day to play with her.”
The shy pooch was a perfect match for the family, and they officially welcomed the little lady into their home on August 14. “She is the sweetest little dog in the world,” muses Patrice. “She’s a little on the quiet side, which is fine with me, and her favorite things to do are sleep and eat!”
That’s not to say Bonnie’s a bona fide couch potato—she still enjoys her city romps. “Her morning and afternoon walks are energetic, especially if pigeons are around,” Patrice says. “Her night walk is a short ‘walk’ period, just to take care of business, and a long ‘carry’ period—we stay out window-shopping for a long time. She only weighs five pounds, so I swoop her up in my arms.”
Clearly, urban wildlife is still a new and marvelous experience for the previously sheltered lass. “If she’s in the park, she is in heaven and walks and sniffs forever,” notes Patrice. “She almost never barks except when she sees pigeons. Then I think she surprises herself with her own bark, like ‘Where did that come from?’”
Patrice adds: “We totally love her—it feels as though she’s always been with us.”

ASPCA Happy Tails: Living the High Life
From the mean streets of NYC to a leafy Connecticut town, one dog’s journey is a truly happy tale of pooch victim turned beloved family member. In the spring of 2008, the ASPCA received an anonymous tip from a caller who had seen several neglected dogs in Staten Island, NY. When our Humane Law Enforcement Agents investigated the report, they made a terrible discovery—dogs left for days in outdoor crates without food and water. The dogs’ temporary caretaker voluntarily relinquished one of the dogs—whose rightful owner had recently been incarcerated—to the ASPCA. The young Pit Bull, whom the ASPCA named Smoke, was malnourished and suffering from a neck wound.
The energetic pooch initially had a tough time putting his troubled past behind him, but after more than a year of rest, relaxation and compassionate care, Smoke emerged as one of the most popular and active dogs in our shelter. A true champ, he was a workout king who loved to chase tennis balls and run around with volunteers. Deemed a “charmer” by ASPCA Manager of Shelter Behavior and Training Victoria Wells, it was no surprise that potential adopter Camille Fleetwood of New Milford, CT, saw something special in Smoke’s soulful gaze.
“I had originally seen Smoke on the ASPCA website in early August and thought he looked sad in his picture,” says Camille. She was intrigued, and eventually made the trip to the ASPCA in Manhattan to meet the dog. One seamless adoption later, Smoke is happily nestled in his fabulous New England life.
“Smoke has settled in nicely,” Camille reports. “He still gets spooked occasionally, but he’s adapted very well and is comfortable in his new surroundings. He has met a lot of our neighbors and seems to be a real people dog!”
Thanks to the kindness of his new family, Smoke finally feels secure enough to relax and let down his furry guard. Camille says: “He loves to roll on his back and have his tummy rubbed! He also loves to cuddle and sprawl with his back legs behind him. He sleeps with me on the bed and pulls the covers over himself with his mouth!”
She adds: “Smoke means the world to us, and we are so glad to have him. We feel blessed to have such a magnificent dog and so happy that we were able to give him a good, loving home.”

Judge Rules: NYC Must Create More Animal Shelters
The ASPCA applauds a decision by the New York State Supreme Court to uphold a 2000 law mandating the existence of full-service animal shelters in all five New York City boroughs. In last week’s ruling, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Marilyn Shafer gave the City 60 days to come up with a plan to implement the law(PDF) which will ultimately allow for more animals to be adopted and fewer to be euthanized.
While the boroughs of Manhattan, Brooklyn and Staten Island are each outfitted with New York City Animal Care and Control shelters, the Bronx and Queens have only part-time animal receiving centers. Animals in these two boroughs are routinely sent to Manhattan and Brooklyn, where shelters quickly reach capacity, resulting in the euthanasia of healthy pets. Although funds were allocated for a full-service shelter in each borough, the City has not yet taken steps to purchase sites in the Bronx and Queens.
“Each New York City borough, by law, was required to have a full-service animal shelter by July 1, 2006,” states Michelle Villagomez, ASPCA Senior Manager of Advocacy & Campaigns. "The ASPCA has been urging New York City for years to fulfill its mandate and provide the people and animals of Queens and the Bronx with these shelters."
In January 2009, the nonprofit group Stray from the Heart sued the City, reasoning that its failure to set up animal shelters in the Bronx and Queens resulted in the “needless suffering and death of homeless cats and dogs." In its lawsuit, the group charged: “Homeless dogs have been dying in unconscionable numbers because the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene has not provided the shelter space required by statute.”
Notes Villagomez, “Not only are healthy, innocent animals being euthanized before getting a chance at adoption, but residents of these boroughs are tax-paying New Yorkers and deserve the same services that residents in the other three boroughs receive.”
The City of New York plans to appeal the court's decision.

ASPCA Happy Tails: Inspector 12
Working as an ASPCA Animal Care Technician, it seemed that Queens, NY, resident Angela Acevedo was destined to cross paths with nine-year-old lap cat Cricket. “Back in June, while I was cleaning cat rooms on the fourth floor, I met this sweet feline,” Angela recalls. Working with her day after day, Angela couldn’t help but notice how gentle Cricket was, but also that no one wanted to adopt her.
“One reason, I think, was because of her condition. She was on a special diet for her kidneys,” Angela recalls. “I didn't want her ending up in a household that would eventually give her back. When I mentioned her to my family, they flat out asked ‘Why don't YOU adopt her?’ That was my green light to bring Cricket home.”
When she arrived, Cricket was nervous. “On her first day, she didn't move around at all,” Angela remembers. “She stayed in the same spot on the couch for days except to use the bathroom. She also wasn't eating or drinking much, so I had to heat up her food and hand-feed her.” After a week, something changed. Cricket began to walk around the living room inspecting every inch, and she still does it to this day. “After a nice, long nap, she walks around the entire house, visiting each room to see who’s in there. Once she leaves the room, we won’t see her for hours.”
Angela’s entire family is in love with this thorough gal, including her other adopted cat, Rambo. “When I get home from work, I’ll find Rambo lying next to her, just watching her sleep,” Angela says. Cricket’s now the official queen of the Acevedo household, presiding with a loud purr. “She may be nine years old and have health issues,” says Angela, “but it doesn’t make us love her any less. I plan to make the rest of her life incredibly fulfilling.”

ASPCA Happy Tails: Stray Cat Strut
Working at the ASPCA, it’s a given that your job rarely ends when you leave the office for the day. This truism recently hit home for Bronx resident and ASPCA Department Coordinator Veronica Rodriguez. Earlier this summer, Veronica was walking toward the building where she lives when she noticed some kids throwing rocks. As she got closer, she saw a small injured cat huddling in a corner.
“I immediately told the kids to stop, and not surprisingly, they started saying terrible things back to me,” Veronica explains. “To make them stop, I sat on the sidewalk in front of the cat. He was still very scared and wouldn’t let me touch him or even go near him. I sat there for a half an hour, and then suddenly, he climbed into my lap. That was the green light for me to bring him to the ASPCA!”
Named Josh by the medical staff, the two-year-old stray passed his medical exam and behavior assessment with flying colors. “He stole the hearts of everyone on the third floor, where we set up his crate when he first arrived,” says Gail Buchwald, ASPCA Senior Vice President. “Even right after he got here, he was rolling on his back and ‘making biscuits’ in the air whenever anyone stopped to talk to him.”
The staff could hardly contain their enthusiasm for sweet, loving Josh. In fact, Veronica was telling her story to other team members, when a potential adopter overheard her and asked to meet this special kitty who’d captured the hearts and minds of so many.
“We went into the socialization room and sat down on the floor, and Josh immediately head butted the adopter’s daughter—it was love at first sight!” enthuses Veronica. “The adopter said, ‘He’s coming home with us—that’s it, he’s mine!’”
