Saved a Puppy From the Side of the Road

While driving to work one morning, I saw a scrap of fur alongside the highway. It looked like a dog, and when it moved I knew it was still alive. I turned around and picked her up. Thankfully she had not been hit, but she could barely walk. She was very skittish, but so weak. I took her right to a local vet where they weighed her in at 24 pounds. Other than a severe case of starvation, she was otherwise free of injury and disease, and the poor thing was only 8 months old.

Over the course of the next three weeks, Rescue, as we named her, gained weight steadily and her coat grew in long and silky. She became much happier and more confident. She eventually weighed 40 pounds! I placed ads everywhere and called around, but could not find anyone who had lost a German shepherd pup. We finally found a home for her with a sweet woman who needed a companion.

Sometimes the helpless scrap of fur on the side of the road is a loving pet just waiting to be rescued.
