Remembering Fae

In a tragic twist of fate, Fae, one of the most severely abused dogs confiscated during July's multi-state dog fighting raid, passed away this week after undergoing her third round of reconstructive surgery.

Fay

Fae, whose face was disfigured as the result of dog fighting, had been under the devoted care of her foster mother, Gale Frey, founder of the St. Louis-based Pit Bull rescue group Mutts-n-Stuff. After a lifetime of abuse, Fae was finally receiving the love and attention she rightly deserved. Fae was on her way to becoming a therapy dog, and was in training to start Canine Good Citizen® classes.

Members of the ASPCA Field Investigations and Response Team, which participated in Fae's rescue during the largest federal crackdown on dog fighting in U.S. history, felt a deep connection to her. "From the first instant I met Fae, I knew she was special and that I would never forget her," says ASPCA Special Agent Kristi Adams. "On the outside, her injuries represented the awfulness of dog fighting, but her unwavering love of humans, despite her many years of abuse, became an inspiration for many of us on the team."

"Fae was a symbol of strength and resilience," explains Kristen Limbert, ASPCA Manager of Field Response. "But most importantly, she was an individual. An amazing dog who seemed to want nothing more than to move beyond her past and experience the kind of happy life she should have had all along."

The ASPCA conveys our deepest condolences to Gale, the staff of Mutts-n-Stuff, and to everyone who was touched by Fae's tragic, yet deeply moving story.

If everyone read the story then spell Fae's name correctly. There are very cruel people in this world and the do terrible things to animals and they should be made to pay. I have a rescue pit myself her name is Tunechi I got her at 4 months old you could see her ribs now she is a healthy 45 pounds and very playful, she is now almost 9 months old. I'm glad that Fae's last days were happy ones. Thank you Gale for being there for her.

These men who have fighting dogs think they are so "macho" but in reality they are just cowards. They are inflicting pain on helpless animals while they just sit and watch. If they like fighting so much maybe they should take up boxing and feel a little pain themselves.

This is why I am a very proud owner of a rescued pitbull. I go home every day to the happiest little man and I am so gratefgul for him every day. at 8 weeks he was already being used as a bait dog and has the scars to prove it. Now he plays with toys, has a Domerman sister and a big warm bed and sofa to sleep on every day. Dog fighting is just plain sick.

This is one of the worst and saddest stories that I have heard it just touched my heart with the sadness of what this dog must have had to go through including all of that abuse that the stupid owners have to put him through. In fact I had a dog named Maya, that went through all of that abuse but right when we saved her and adopted her she died in a field fire.

  • Submitted by Josh at:January 8, 2010 12:00 AM

If I was Fay I would run for my my life. I am very very lucky to have a dog named Bailey. I was always a animal lover but this this touched my heart.

It is so dreadful that the human race is so heartless and distructive to some of the most valued friends anyone could ever have. People who are cruel to helpless animals will not hesistate to hurt another human. Laws need to be tougher and examples need to be set. Anyone that deliberately hurts an animal or human should be put to death. Time to clean out the prisons and set some life long examples. This is the only way to stop the madness.

Remembering Fay was a heart breaking story but yet very sad and no matter what owners need to get their care for everything that a dog needs but Fay was a lucky survivor who never gave up and was a bold and good dog. I have a dog that is a dachshund that is name Bailey and we really take care of him and it was always my goal to keep him safe and healthy. If anyone kills or hurts him I will not be happy and I would really be sad. I had a cat that was with my brother back in Seattle and he had the window open and he fell 7 stories and he broke his back and they couldn't help him so they put him to sleep. It really broke my heart and I was really mad too.

One of my favorite quotes: “The greatness of a nation and its moral progress can be judged by the way its animals are treated” ~ Mahatma Ghandi. It certainly shines a different light on the US, along with the entire world. I don't think I've seen many nations that really treat animals well. That says so much about people. I sincerely hope Fay's days after her rescue were the most beautiful days ever! Thank you, ASPCA, and all those involved with fighting animal cruelty.

This made me cry. Why are people so dang cruel. If the people who did this to this poor baby could experience any of what she went through, they would probably think twice before doing such nasty things. I don't understand people who abuse any kind of animal. But to see a poor dog go through this due to stupidity just really makes me mad. I have raised pits in the past and have one now going on 9 years and he is the sweetest thing and to see that picture of Fay just breaks my heart. I thank the people who have helped Fay and wish for the rest of her life to be the most beautiful life ever.

Fay's life started out bad but at least she got what she deserved in the end. A great life and love and now shes in a better place. I will never forget this story of Fay. And i thank all those who go out there and save these animals lives. You are my role model and i hope to do what you do when i get older. Thankyou and god bless Fay!

This poor innocent dog did not deserve to be put through the pain she was put through. And the person who caused her pain WILL experience the same kind of pain in the end. God does not accept these type of people or does he have pity on them. Thank you to the woman who rescued her and gave her another fight at life. May Fay rest in peace and enjoy the new life she will have at the Rainbow Bridge where she will no longer have scars or be disfigured or in pain.

Thanks to you guys, she can now rest-in-peace. She can now be happy and move-on in a place where cruelty is not permitted. Fay's story has touched my heart and at least the staff Mutts-n-Stuff rescued her on time. I'm proud to say that I love animals and I never wouldn't hurt any of them, if I had the money to build a big rescue shelter for animals that have been neglected, harm, or abused, I would build it in a second, I just wish for all those poor animals out there on the streets to have a house or a family to refuge in. R.I.P Fay.....They and us will always remember you.

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge. When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable. All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor. Those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind. They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent. His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster. You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart. Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....

What can I say about this beautiful brave dog ? I fell in love with her . I knew her in my heart . Maybe that's why I can't get her or her story out of my mind . Fay needs to be remembered , and NEVER forgotten . This girl endured so much . I can't for the life of me understand why people think that they can do these horrific things to something that loves you no matter what . Why does it have to be that the one(s) they depend on they fear the most ; but still have love for them . I believe that dogs are a beautiful symbol of true love . Especially Fay . I'm so happy that she got love in return before her passing . I'm sure that it felt great for her to know that there are people who can love her for what she is , and not what she was made to do . She was so close to recovery . What happened ? I guess that her little body just couldn't handle anymore . I prayed for her , and wanted her to make it more than you know . I hope that she is running free at Rainbow Bridge . She will shine there . I really wish that there could be some kind of a Fay fund or foundation made for her . It would be such a tribute to such an amazing dog . Love you Fay : I'll ALWAYS remember you .

I HAVE 3 OF MY OWN AND ALL OF THEM HAVE BEEN RESCUED FROM THE POUND IN SOME WAY. FAY SEEMS TO HAVE BEEN A WONDERFUL DOG. MY SISTER HAS A PIT AND LOVES HIM VERY MUCH. SOMEONE STOLE THE OTHER ONE SHE HAD AND SHE JUST PRAYS THAT HE WASNT STOLEN TO BE FOUGHT IN DOG FIGHTS. SHE RESCUED ANOTHER ONE AND KEEPS HIM IN THE HOUSE NOW. PEOPLE SHOULD BE PUNISHED MORE SEVERELY FOR CRUELTY TO ANIMALS. MAYBE A LOT MORE ANIMALS COULD BE SAVED!! MAY GOD BLESS EVERYONE WHO TOOK CARE OF FAY. My heart breaks for Fay because she was a victim of human abuse. Animals are the ONLY species on this earth that are capable of unconditional love. The human race must be the most horrible species. There is so much abuse that goes on every day and for some reason, most people won't get involved. I say "GET INVOLVED" ! Who will speak for the animals if we don't ???

I think animal abuse is very wrong and that Fay's story is a a tragic example of it. On the other hand, her story shows that even animals like her can still be changed into loving, cherished pets. I hope her story continues to touch people..... Thanks Fay

I want to share this cuote with all of you... "A dog has no use for fancy cars, big homes, or designer clothes. A water log stick will do just fine. A dog doesn't care if your rich or poor, educated or illiterate, clever or dull, smart or dumb. Give him your heart and he'll give you his. How many people can you say that about? How many people can make you feel rare and pure and special? How many people can make you feel extraordinary?" I just read this and this story touched deeply in my heart...IT'S SO WRONG!!!!! People yet don't realize how special dogs are...they are ANGELS, they supose to be "man best friend"... we're not supose to be their worst enemies. I can't find the right words to describe how beautiful, extrordinary, amaizing dogs are... My condolence to Gale Frey, Fay is in a way better place...She's going to be eternaly greatful to you because you saved her and she passed away with lots of happines and love around.

So many animals abused by humans... yet they love us so unconditionally. What a horrid species are we that could hurt and neglect something so beautiful; just to have that animal look back at us with love. Most humans don't deserve their animals. God bless you Fay. I know you will find love in your new home. The kind of love that all animals deserve. My heart breaks for you.

the only way animal abuse will ever stop is if the punishment from our justice system changes. When people know they will pay severly for abusing an animal they will think twice. I believe they need to put closer attention with much stricter consequences not just for the sake of the animals they will harm but because anyone who can don these kind of cruel heartless acts to an animal who has never harmed them is a time bomb to the rest of society. Every horiffic serial killer always abused animals first. Twisted minds of this catogory are just plain frightening they should be locked up for years and evaluated. They are literally sick and need to be treated as such 1000 dollar fines and 2 month probations come on what a travesty to this countries justice will prevail mentality. These people sicken me but our justice system sickens me more!!!!!

  • Submitted by Amanda S at:January 2, 2010 12:00 AM

The fact that people do things like this to animals makes me sick to my stomach.... I have 3 pits....I can't see how someone could look at their dog's expressive kind face and be okay with subjecting their animal to some of the worst conditions a living thing could imagine.. and how they live with themselves is beyond me... I think those people should be found mentally unstable, and I also believe they should have tougher consequences for their actions..( i watched on animal planet, a man, convicted of animal abuse, fined 1,000, 2 days in jail, and couldn't posses a dog for 90 days..... seriously???? And the whole Mike Vick thing??? The fines he paid for what he makes disgusts me...... and did you hear?? He wants another dog?? I'll scream if they allow that. I believe in second chances, BUT seriously if it was one dog, If it was my choice I'd consider it... But it was several dogs... he made that conscience more than once.. he should have to suffer for every one of those jobs. he also shouldn't be privledged to have the career he has, he should have to go get a regular old job........R.I.P. Fay... Hopefully your demise will help people understand the seriousness of situations like this everywhere.... This story reminds me of "7" one of Mick Vick's victims.. RIP to "7" as well.....

I came to the ASPCA web site to sign up as a Monthly Giver and found the picture and story of Fay. That is a picture I will never get out of my mind. I understand man's cruelty to its own species but will never understand this stuff. And it is not just the Michael Vicks of the world, but just as much those who welcome these sickos back into society with open arms because they have done some jail time or can throw a football. I look forward to the day when our legal system allows for the equal and like physical punishment to animal abusers as they have inflicted on some of our most perfect species. Almost makes one want to form a vigilante group for those that cannot speak for or defend themselves.

This story again proves the spirit of a dog that no matter how horrible humans where to her she still found it in her heart to trust that there CAN be and ARE wonderful people like Gale and the staff at Mutts-N-Stuff. Thank you Gale and your staff to help Fay know there are humans that do provide love, comfort and safety for these precious animals.

Thank you not only for a heart-felt story but also for showing the horrific heinous injuries these dogs incur. I’ve lived long enough to believe that we can not stop all grossly negligent human behavior but we may help some who are severely affected by it. These become the miracle animals and bless everyone worldwide who participate in any way to help create a quality of life for these dear animals that can’t advocate for themselves.

MY GOD, how can ANY human being do this to a poor animal? This just tears my heart into. I know that one day, the laws are going to toughen up on these animal abusers...I have to agree with John Corrado, "Michael Vick" should be picking up dog poo. He shouldn't even be OUT of jail for all that he done. NOT back in the spotlight in the high paying game of football. He doesn't deserve that. He got nothing but a slap on the wrist. I know that one day, ASPCA is going to change all this. THANK YOU ASPCA for all that you do. I am a proud member...and I do my part also in my neighborhood to prevent animal cruelty. Poor Fay is a reminder of what that cruelty can do...PLEASE STOP THIS CRUELTY!!!! That poor dog just crushes my heart, thinking a human being can be THIS ABUSIVE!

ASPCA is awesome in every right. It is deeply saddening that all animals alike only what the love of a person or their owner and yet millions still are abused, homeless, or mistreated. Fay got that love at least before she passed and is in a place better. I only hope you find good homes for the other animals and encourage everyone to vote or push your political leaders for tougher punishments for animal abuse. Best of luck ASPCA!

This story really touches my heart very deeply. I can never understand why people would do such a thing. Even after all the abuse that she encountered she still mad changes and found love in the end. Any animals and humans are created from God and he wants us to love one another then we should. Because of this story and others I will start donating to ASPCA. I hope that my contribution will help other abused animals to get the help and love they need.

That is so sad to see an animal tormented and abused. I don't understand how anyone can do such a thing. I am glad Fay got to know some of the loving and kindness some of us are able to give. I have a beagle-bull terrier, I rescued who as a baby had her tendons torn as a result her leg was broken in two places. She isn't able to use that leg, but she still has fun. I feel for her in cold months I'm pretty sure she has arthritis in that leg. But thevets comment always they have never seen such a loving and sociable dog. Her name is Winnie.

The Fay story has touched my heart. It's really bothersome to know that there are persons who will knowingly, intentionally hurt an animal that is just, after all, living. My husband and I were lucky enough to have many baby water frogs. We gave them to family and friends. Although, we were dumb-founded to find out that one person we gave a couple of baby water frogs just dumped them out in the cold to die. She has two dogs, as well. I don't even want to imagine what her other animals are going through. They are just little frogs, but they are living things. People like that shouldn't have animals. She could have given them back.
