Dog Forced to Eat Razor Blades Dies—Suspect Found Guilty

ASPCA HLEIt was a devastating discovery. Last January, ASPCA Special Agents arrived at an abandoned Bronx home to find the emaciated body of a dog lying lifeless among piles of garbage and feces. A thorough investigation by our Agents led to the arrest of Cherika Alvarez. The 30-year-old was charged with abandoning her one-year-old Pit Bull, Alizé, mid November 2009.

A necropsy proved that the emaciated dog ate nothing but razor blades, bits of plastic, wood chips, garbage and ketchup packets for weeks before he died.

“This was a clear-cut case of severe and inexcusable animal neglect,” says Stacy Wolf, ASPCA Vice President and Chief Legal Counsel for the Humane Law Enforcement. “The necropsy established in horrifying detail what this dog ingested in a futile attempt to stay alive.”

Last week, with strong evidence at hand, Judge Robert Sackett found Alvarez guilty of animal cruelty. She now faces up to one year in prison and a $1,000 fine at her September 28 sentencing.

Take Action!
We need you on our side! If you suspect an animal may be the victim of neglect or abuse, please report it. Visit our Report Cruelty FAQ to learn how to report cruelty in your neighborhood.

That punishment is a complete joke. Until we have harsher punishments for animal abusers, things like this will continue to happen. Our lawmakers need to wake up to the reality that animal abuse is a serious crime and should be treated as such.

A year isn't long enough. A living being is a living being. If this was done to a human child...

She should have a special diet in jail....eat the same things that the poor dog had to eat.

Her actions were unconscionable. That young dog was left to die alone. Fat chance she'll be ordered to pay much of a fine, let alone spend ANY time in jail . . .

@Michelle - all kinds of people get and abuse Pitts. It seems to be more of a cultural imitation of the quote "Gangsta" image. Stupid people have to parrot others gestures and styles as they lack individuality. What happened to this poor animal was the result of a mentally sick or desperate individual. We cannot let her ignorance divide us in the unified goal to stop animal abuse. One way is to push and petition for the laws now on the books to be enforced to their strictest levels. Yes get angry and use that energy to get involved. This very site has many ways to help and it also helps to pray if you believe!

Dale, white ghetto trash??! Are you SERIOUS?! This was spic trash! The only one's that are mostly abusing animals are black and spanish. They are the one's always copying white people, getting pit bulls and never take care of them. They don't take care of ANYTHING! I think this piece of trash should be skinned alive! IT should be charged with MURDER!

I agree with everyone on here that 1 year and $1,000 is NOT ENOUGH! Seriously, if you were to leave a child like that you would get a MUCH worse SENTENCING! Pets are just like Family to many of us, so why shouldn't she get a higher penalty? Just because the breed of the dog is Pit doesn't mean you get to act like a jack a** and be mean to the poor baby. May this pup live in doggy heaven happily and the owner rot in hell!

  • Submitted by Rosena at:August 23, 2011 08:57 PM

I can believe people can do this. Some people have no common sense. It is a shme that all the animals hve to be treated this. We need to find a way to stop it. Let me take care of her the way he treated her dog, I bet she wouldn't do it again.

  • Submitted by Deena at:August 23, 2011 08:00 PM

This stupid bitch should rot in hell!! how can someone harm an animal! It breaks my heart to see or hear about animal abuse.

  • Submitted by Dale at:August 23, 2011 07:50 PM

Why are owners of pit bulls always trash? It's such a shame these poor dogs get a bad rap when it's the white/ghetto trash causing the problem.

1 year in jail and $1000 fine? NOT acceptable by any means. They should be forced to live as the dog was forced to live...trapped alone in squalor until they die the same horrible death. There is no other justice.

$1,000.00 and a year in jail?! Seriously?!?! It would be improper comment etiquette of me to post what I'm thinking right now. I'm sickened by this......

  • Submitted by Holly at:August 23, 2011 06:49 PM

That is an outrageous punishment! Not only did that poor dog die because of her neglect, but it died in what I can only imagine to be a slow horrible death! Laws need to be harsher!!

  • Submitted by Heather at:August 23, 2011 06:38 PM

@kaeri - yes we need harsher punishment for animal cruelty, but when the time comes to get lawmakers on our side, where is all these angry people? @erika - speaking out of anger on a public forum. It doesn't do any good and it's useless. People who talk like that make me uncomfortable because they're so flippant about human life or rights. If you want to change things, actually do something, not just sit on your bum acting like you actually care about something.

  • Submitted by Jaya at:August 23, 2011 06:12 PM

Only an year of jail time for such a monster?!!! That is grossly inappropriate for a crime such as this.

  • Submitted by erika at:August 23, 2011 05:09 PM

shut up heather people r just talking out of anger...the one to be mad at is this thing that killed this animal..y dont u go and revive the oprah and tell your concerns heather...anyway this thing that did this crime does deserve worse treatment

  • Submitted by Harimy at:August 23, 2011 04:32 PM

I do hope she has the worst year of her whole life in prison, and also some good years in hell, as well, after she passes away. One year is far too little for her. How I wish people like this didn't exist in this world! It makes me completely sick!

I am so sickof hearing of these tragic events that happen to animals, I hate to say this but just kill the peopole doing this just kill them cut their heads off, drag them behind cars, set them on fire, hell they do it to animals why not?

  • Submitted by kaeri at:August 23, 2011 03:35 PM

@Heather - if an elder or child was forced to eat razor blades and wood chips "to survive" and then died, I'm pretty sure that would be more than neglect or endangerment - voluntary manslaughter at least. But, this is an animal instead of a person so different rules apply, I suppose. We should have harsher punishments for animal abusers.

  • Submitted by nita at:August 23, 2011 03:18 PM

A year in jail and $1000 fine is not restitution for what this monster did! It's slapping her on the wrist and saying "You be good now". She is dangerous to animals and people. She needs to do a good 15 to 20 with a lot of therapy thrown in. Chop up some wood chips with some razor blade shavings and dirty ketchup packs and serve it to her for dinner. Then she will know what it feels like to have her insides ripped to pieces while she;s trying to eat garbage that's not even food in order to stay alive. We need to fight for stiffer sentences for animal abusers, so there will be less cases as a result!

  • Submitted by Heather at:August 23, 2011 03:05 PM

Really, you all amaze me. If you all have such sick violent fantasies about a fellow human being, then please leave the ASPCA and run to the nearest "animal lover" domestic terrorism group! If you want to make the sentence harsher you should arrange for a petition to bring harsher punishments over animal cruelty. And you are definitely NOT going to change a politician/lawmakers mind by demanding a convicted person to undergo torture, which is AGAINST THE LAW. If this was a case of a child or senior, it will only come to neglect and endangerment, not murder. I remember another article posted earlier about her leaving because her place was forclosed and she thought someone would take her dog in (a neighbor), so I wonder what happened to that. This is gross neglect and obviously endangerment (if you never seen a foreclosed home, people usually end up trashing the place before leaving) leaving all that trash around. But it would never be counted as murder, and again, it's illegal to torture a convicted criminal, they have rights the same as we have rights. If we want to remove their rights, we would have to give up ours.

  • Submitted by Joanna at:August 23, 2011 03:04 PM

Can't believe the punishment is only a year in jail and $1000 fine!! I agree with all the comments here; she needs to be punished the same way as she treats her dog!! And she needs to burn in hell!!! An eye for an eye is the correct and only option for animal abusers. Why are the punishments so light for animal cruelty!!? And we all know one year later she's gonna walk out and continue to abuse more poor, innocent animals!!! Something is seriously wrong with our society.

  • Submitted by AlanaR at:August 23, 2011 03:01 PM

Clearly this is not strong enough punishment, the law is too lax, what is the ASPCA doing with their millions to strengthen the law and require harsher sentences I wonder?

  • Submitted by Judi at:August 23, 2011 02:59 PM

This dog owner should definitely do 10 years in prison and a $100,000 fine.... non negotiable. All 10 years should be done.

  • Submitted by katie at:August 23, 2011 02:43 PM

  • Submitted by Veronica at:August 23, 2011 02:41 PM

Oh, wow. such stern punishment for what she did! not. A little slap on the hand, barely. You call that punishment?

  • Submitted by Brie at:August 23, 2011 02:13 PM

One year? $1000? Really? And they call that justice? I work at a pet resort, and I firmly believe that a pet is just as important to a family as their own children. If that woman had done that to her son or daughter, she'd be charged with murder/manslaughter. But if it's an animal all she gets is some jail time. Not prison, jail. Where she gets 3 square meals a day and can even get visitors. The punishment needs to fit the crime, and this punishment doesn't.

  • Submitted by icprncz at:August 23, 2011 01:45 PM

PEOPLE. IT SAYS "MAY FACE UP TO 1 YEAR"!! which means that it may not happen or it may be even 3 months or just a hefty fine. I rarely see any people actually get convicted of animal cruelty and gets sent to jails for years. we need to gather up and do something and write a petition. this woman deserves a severe punishment. if justice don't apply to her, i would like to drag her down the street holding her by the hair for 1 hour at least.

Only 1 year and a $1000, you must be kidding?!? Our society's value on animal welfare and worth has been wrongly miscalculated. Imagine if this was a human baby. This fine would be absurd, and not even considered. It should be for life without parole. A human baby and a dog are both similarly innocent and dependent on us for survival. Please don't adopt or house a pet if you are unable to provide and care for it.

  • Submitted by JMG at:August 23, 2011 01:14 PM

You have to be a pretty miserable and horrible person to intentionally cause an animal to suffer in this way. Especially to hear a woman caused this suffering - usually women have more compassion for things - since they are by design, more nurturing. I hope this chick doesn't have any kids. GOD BLESS THE POOR DOG - and what he endured. Eating razor blades in an attempt to stay alive - maybe that could be the owners punishment?????

  • Submitted by Sandy at:August 23, 2011 01:02 PM

One year and a $1,000?, thats it? This punishment should be more severe. I don't know whats going on with this country. People are getting off too easy. Something needs to change.

  • Submitted by Debbie at:August 23, 2011 12:52 PM

I agree 100% the punishment should be more strict and I hope to God she gets the full sentence. However, I am so glad they caught her and she didn't just get away with this. We are going in the right direction by punishing these people and we need to continue to fight until every person that commits this type of crime gets a felony sentence. Period.

You have resulted in the death of an innocent, defenceless life and therefore if you kill a child or an elderly person do you get a $1,000 fine for that?

  • Submitted by megan at:August 23, 2011 12:46 PM

She should be treated the same way she treated that sweet innocent dog!Leave her locked up with nothing to eat except razor blades, ketchup packs and wood chips to eat! She should serve a life sentence! She took a life so she should not be able to spend her life free! What is $1,000 fine? Forget the fine, throw her butt in jail for life! She`ll get probation(if that) and will have to pay the $1,000 fine! it is just heartbreaking and sickening! This is why animal abuse continues, they know they`ll get away with it! It is inconceivable to comprehend how hungry that poor dog must have been to eat objects. The sheer desperation Alize felt must have consumed her every fiber until finally giving into dealth. That is a dog with a will of iron. That woman needs to spend every minute in her cell for the entire year on her knees begging God to forgive her, pay every penny of the fine and after go to serious theropy for a long long time. If she would do this to an animal people are next.

  • Submitted by Susan at:August 23, 2011 12:02 PM

  • Submitted by Molly at:August 23, 2011 11:55 AM

I thinks this woman should have to face the same cruel treatment this poor dog had to endure. She should be locked up for years not A year. How could someone just leave a poor animal to fend for themselves. I am glad she was found guilty but the sentences is not near harsh enough.

  • Submitted by BV at:August 23, 2011 11:54 AM

one year and $1000 fine is not nearly enough punishment for such horrific crimes!!! There must be a way to petition lawmakers to increase punishments for these types of crimes, and hope that they work as a deterrent in the future! Anyone who commits behavior like this should be charged with a FELONY and should be facing a MINIMUM of 1-2 years in prison, with a MUCH HIGHER sentence if convicted and depending on the severity of the crime. Of course, this woman should be forced to eat razor blades herself. But in this world, I'll settle for a 5 year prison sentence and a 25,000 dollar fine.

  • Submitted by Noel at:August 23, 2011 11:52 AM

People that do such things should not be allowed to have a pet again. She could have taken it to a shelter if she was not able to care for it. At least it would have had a chance. You don't expect a neighbor to check on the animal, what good does that do? You take it to a shelter!! Stupid, selfish people! No compassion at all for the animal's welfare.

  • Submitted by Jon at:August 23, 2011 11:47 AM

Kinda sad to me that an animal life "man's best friend" left to starve, suffer and die only gets what seems like a slap on the hand. $1000 is hardly anything... nor is a year imo. Should be more like 5 years & $10,000 to make people take animal abuse more seriously. The time in jail is what's important... some people have a lot of money and to them even $10K would be laughable.

When will this ever end? What is wrong with people? Tougher laws won't work. If you commit murder there is a penalty of life in prison or the death penalty but that doesn't stop people from killing each other. So what can we do....how many more animals have to suffer?
