Animals Can’t Dial 911, But You Can
Animal cruelty is a crime in every state. And one of the most important actions you can take is to report suspicious behavior. But who do you call? Great question. The police department that covers your city is required to investigate complaints of animal cruelty. There may also be an animal control agency or humane society who conducts these investigations. But regardless of who handles the case, chances are without your phone call the abuse will go unreported.
“By making a complaint to the police or humane society in your area—you can even do so anonymously—you are making sure that animals in need are rescued and that perpetrators are brought to justice,” says ASPCA Special Agent Joann Sandano.
If you live in New York City, you can file your complaints directly with the ASPCA Humane Law Enforcement department, at (212) 876-7700, ext. 4450, or humanel@aspca.org. To find contact information for your local shelter, visit the ASPCA's searchable shelter database.

Pet First Aid—Is It a Priority?
Let’s face it: Accidents happen—especially when it comes to our active and curious pets. Slips, trips, bumps and spills, whatever the harm, it’s really important to have a first aid protocol in place.
Find an emergency vet. If your vet clinic doesn’t provide 24-hour service, talk to them about emergency care options in your area. It’s a smart idea to keep the name, number and address of an emergency hospital tacked to the refrigerator or stored in your cell phone for easy access.
Learn life-saving actions:
- If your pet is bleeding, immediately elevate and apply pressure to the wound.
- If your pet is choking, place your fingers in his mouth to see if you can remove the blockage. If you’re unable to remove the foreign object, perform a modified Heimlich maneuver by giving a sharp rap to his chest. This should dislodge the object.

Four Must-Do’s for Vacationing with Your Pet!
Can’t stand leaving your pet behind on vacation? You don’t have to! More people are choosing to include their companions in family vacations than ever before. Just keep in mind that a bit of extra planning—and packing—may be in order.
- Time for a check-up. A trip to the vet is a good idea. You want to make sure all vaccinations are up to date before you hit the open road.
- Location! Location! Location! It's essential to make sure your accommodations, be they hotel or apartment, are pet-friendly. Otherwise, you could be in for a really unpleasant surprise when you arrive at your destination.
- Prevention is key. Mistakes happen, so make sure your pet has a microchip and is wearing a collar and ID tag.
- Pack for your pup! Be sure to bring along all of the necessary supplies to care for your pet. Double check to make sure you have a crate, toys, plenty of food and a doggy seatbelt!
