2011 My Furry Valentine Photo Contest

dog With Valentine's Day just around the corner, we can’t help but think of true love—true puppy (and kitty) love that is! Remember the first time you fell in love with your adopted companion? You gazed into each other’s eyes, and all you could hear was the thump, thump, thump of… his wagging tail?!

This February, we’re thrilled to announce our 2011 My Furry Valentine Photo Contest. Think back and remember the moment you realized you and your companion were meant to be together forever. In 100 words or less share your love story with us, and send it along with a prize-winning photo! Furry, finned or feathered—all companion animals can compete.

The top five winners—selected by ASPCA staff—will receive an ASPCA Prize Pack and be featured on our website. Entries will be accepted now through February 12, 2011—we can’t wait to see what you’ve got for us!

Please send all submissions to PhotoContest@ASPCA.org.

Allow me to begin with a back story. About 9 years ago, my family dog (Hampton) died after 14 years as a loyal member of our family. As children, my brother Allen and I found a pregnant female Chow mix in our neighborhood, so we convinced our parents to adopt her. She gave birth to 6 beautiful puppies, 5 of them possessing an easy-going temperament, and then there was Hampton the rebel. The OTHER 5 were easily adopted to family and friend but Hampton was difficult to adopt so he became our Allen and my companion. He protected us and kept us safe through parents' divorce, teenage confusions, and all out crazy times. Soon after my 18th birthday, Hampton died. Needless to say we were all crushed. About 2 months later, we realized that we needed a new pup to fill the giant vote so Allen and I went on a trip to the Humane Society. We strolled up and down the hallways looking at puppy dog eyes and my gaze fell on Molly. She is a black and white Jack Russell mix and there was simply something about her. I knew that she wouldn't be a "protector" but somehow from looking I knew she would be one hell of a companion. So I chose her. From that day on, she has been my favorite and I hers.

We inherited our dog Bo 4 short years ago. She is a 6 yr old Shiba-Inu and was just diagnosed w/ kidney disease. Our family is devastated. She is my boys best friend. She has come so far in the short time we have had her. We adore her. We do not know how much time we have left w/ her but we told our boys every day w/ her is a gift. Please love on your pets every day. You never know how long you will have them. I am thankful for the time we have been given with this sweet girl.

I submitted a picture of our Saphiegirl2. She is the best companion for my son who has Asberger's Autism. Every morning she watches her brother get on the bus at the door and also waits from him at the door when he comes home from school. Saphie and him love to play. He will play tug a war with her. His favorite thing with Saphie is for her to give him lots of kisses. This makes him happy. Saphie has been an amazing dog to this family. She was a rescue from a local shelter at 2 months old. Someone just dropped her off at the front door of the shelter. We knew the minute we saw her she was the one for this family. My son picked her out. He did a wonderful job choosing her. Today, Saphie and her brother are best buddies also it helps him with Autism. He gets to interact with her.

I have a hanidcap cat and I taught my cat how to walk, I also have a doggy. I think love between an owner and an animal is something unique and unconditional. I am competing for this contest and in my pictures I will used my husky. Everyone who competes I wish you the best! But I love the fact that everyone here is passionate about animals. :D

I adopted Sasha (my cat) from the SPCA in St Petersburg, FL in July 2010. When I read her intake form it stated the she had fleas and parasites from how well her previous owner had taken care of her. Now she is a happy loving inside Cat that is well taken care of and even has her own wellness plan at Banfield Pet Hospital. That way she gets all the care she needs. At first she would hide and now she has made herself at home with her brother (my Cat Diesel) and myself, and loves to cuddle up with her Mama (me).

I think too many of the above comments about this contest are making to much of a big deal about the wording of the types of animals that can be entered. This contest is for ANY type of ANIMAL! Weather it be a dog, cat, fish, frog, horse, goat, bird...."all companion animals can compete" so if you have a pot belly pig that is your companion your in too....This is about the love and bound between Pet owners and their pets! :D

We adopted my dog Cubby when he was four months old from a home which rescued him from a kill shelter. I have come to love him more than I ever thought I could - he's the most loving, most beautiful and wonderful dog out there. He is a golden/chow/collie/German Shepard mix and he's perfect! I love him with all my heart and can't imagine a better loved dog - because he's got it good!

It was love at first sight. I adopted my dog from a rescue organization that pulled her from a high-kill shelter in Tennessee. She was dumped at this shelter while nursing her puppies. The shelter decided that it was going to euthanize her once she was done nursing her pups. Why? Because she only has 3 legs. I am so glad the rescue organization saved her and I found her. She is the sweetest, most loving dog. When you are ready to adopt, don't forget to look at the special needs dogs too, because like my sweetie, she doesn't even know she is different.

@dana - It says, "Furry, finned or feathered—all companion animals can compete." So, cats are included too.

@Rhonda: The cliche term is puppy love. They're simply making a reference to that. there's no "preference" to dogs over cats.

  • Submitted by Leslie at:January 28, 2011 02:24 PM

All 4 of my dogs and all 4 of my cats are animals that people have "thrown away". My son and I have rescued each one of them off the street. You can tell that they are gratefull by the unconditional love that they give us! I love each and every one of them! Please don't use breeders or pet stores!! Go to your local shelters and save a dogs life!!

  • Submitted by Rhonda at:January 28, 2011 12:00 PM

I love ASPCA and wouldn't dream of saying anything negative about your work but do have to ask why "kitty" is in parenthesis next to puppies as if an after thoght. Why not just "puppies and kitties." Seems to show preference toward dogs (I love dogs too!). Just saying.

I lost the love of my life, Verbie. We were soulmates, when our eyes connected to each other, i knew he was mine.. He was the best American Pittbull anyone could fall in love with. I miss him, he passed away from a sudden illness in July of 2010. My soty is different, in brief when i new my mom was dieing of breast cancer, after visiting her and taking care of her, i would go and visit the ct. humane society where i would be surrounded by so much love from animals, animals are my passion. I saw this handsome looking six month pittbull, he seemed to have the same sad eyes as me, well needless to say 12 years later. My heart was broken i didn't think i could even go on,but i beleive verbie is watching over me. So i promised every year even when i got him from day one, we would donate once a year to ASPCA in NY, him and i were members. Our anniversay is coming up, i got him on valentines day, and when i picked him up, a counselor pointed out to me, "look he has a little tiny heart on his back area". I have since gotten a new puppy, i love her to death, i would have gotten another american pittbull, because to me they are the greatest of breeds, but unfortunately, i might be losing my home, and i was told from many places they do not accept pittbulls. So i go on but there isn't a day i don't think about Verbie. So I promised that i will always give to the ASPCA once a year in Verbies name for all animals (especially pittbulls) because ASPCA is the most wonderful organization i have ever dealt with. I hope to someday visit them to say thankyou from me and Verbie for rescuing pittbulls.

I found this kitten out in our bushes along with her sister and brother and mom. They all were ferile cats. I trapped all 4 of them to have them spayed. While Precious was in my house..in a cage..somehow she got out. I found her , picked her up and tried to put her back. She bit me in the process. This is what I called in the end...a Love Bite..cause it was the beginnings of the relationship between her and I. Because of that bite...she was forced to be isolated in our house for a week more. During that time I got to know her more. Playing with her through the cage, talking to her, eventually petting her..we became friends. Now she is my best friend and is tamed. I was going to release her outside but is now our house cat. I love her so much and she loves me too.

I hope that someone will read this post and tell me what to do. I have contacted the local humane Society and was pushed off to Animal Control who told me that they required a police complaint to act. Prior to this we contacted our local Animal Control who informed me that they did not handle cats. My neighbor and I walked across the street and met a property owner in the yard. Her answer to our complaint was that she could do nothing to help us because the cats belonged to her mother who was living with them. A few days later my neighbor and I walked across the street again and knocked on the door. When it opened I was able to count 26 cats/kittens and five dogs, the smell almost knocked me down. The animals were roaming into the kitchen and main room. I have no idea how many were in the rest of the house as our neighbor said we had been told that the animals were her mother’s. I next tried the police and was put through the district operator who sent out a car. The officer seemed amused by our putting in a complaint but took it anyway. My neighbor also filed a complaint and supposedly talked to someone with the ASPCA and made arrangements to meet him. That person did not show up or call to explain, apologize or designate another time to visit us and tell us about what we could do. (Animal Control did give us one hint which was to fill a squirt bottle with diluted Protein found that may provide relief from neuropathic pain.

I adopted my little guy almost 2 years ago from a shelter. He had been abandoned as a puppy because his skull was not closed and he had water on the brain when he was born. For me, it was love at first sight, literally. He was the only dog I looked at on the humane society website. He is the sweetest and the love of my life. I cannot imagine my life without him.

I adopted my baby on May 3,2009. He was one of the puppies from the Georgia puppy mill that was discovered by the police. Scruffy is our baby, he has brought joy to our home and puts a smile on our face daily. I discovered that his previous owner had given him away to be put to death. How cruel!!!! Last year, I adopted another dog from an animal shelter and gave him to my daughter as a a gift. He is loved, cared for and he is my daughter's and the kids main squeeze. Think when you want a dog, there are so many that need our love. Thanks, CT SPCA and New Haven Animal shelter!!!!!

She is so smart and you could tell instantly how much she appreciated us saving her. Adopt a pet and guarenteed within the first month, the gratitude you recieve from the pet is all the award you need.

We recently adopted a dog from our local animal shelter and she is a blessing to our family. Before anyone decides to go out and spend lots of money on an animal, think about a shelter. These animals need a loving and caring family that they have possibly never had. You will not regret it!!! Save a life, Adopt a Pet.
