Miami Success Story

by Cynthia Coutard of the Humane Society of Greater Miami

Linda McEnany with Beauty the dogIt takes a unique individual to show love and devotion to what some may call an unadoptable dog. So is the case of Beauty. Originally named Jeep, after being found in the Humane Society of Greater Miami parking lot, Jeep was a 13-year-old senior pet who embodied everything adopters oftentimes avoid.

Overweight, blind (induced by cataracts) and with four teeth (total) in her mouth, Jeep’s journey in finding a forever home is a story of love.

Hours turned into days and the days to weeks as Jeep waited to be adopted. As if it were sheer destiny, passionate supporters of the Humane Society Patrick and Linda McEnany were told of Jeep’s ailments and extended stay at the shelter. Like superheroes in disguise, the McEnany’s adopted Jeep, who was forever to be known as Beauty.

Not a week or holiday passed without a card from the McEnanys featuring Beauty. Quite the socialite in her distinctive stroller, she traveled everywhere with her parents, including to dinners out. It was understood by establishments frequented by the McEnanys that the seating was always for three.

The evolution of Jeep-to-Beauty is a tale of how a pet who was continuously overlooked turned out to be the missing piece in a family.

Miami Highlights

Miami is off to a great start as an ASPCA partner community. Since joining forces with the ASPCA, the Miami partnership has:

  • Increased low cost spay/neuter opportunities to the community.
  • Increased the numbers of dogs and cats transferred from Miami Dade Animal Services to the Humane Society and Cat Network as well as other committed rescue groups and shelters.
  • Promoted the ID tagging of pets to decrease the number of lost pets becoming homeless.
