Shelter Manager

Job Summary:

The Shelter Manager oversees all aspects of temporary sheltering for the Field Investigations and Response Department during large scale cruelty seizures and natural disasters and other emergency sheltering operations. During deployments the Manager may assume a leadership responsibility for day-to-day shelter operations including animal care, medical treatments, medical documentation, supervision of volunteer teams, budget management and accurate record keeping. The Manager will serve as on scene veterinary assistant for cruelty responses and disasters. The position will support the Department in an administrative capacity when not on deployment. This position requires extensive travel within the United States and is a unique opportunity for a motivated team leader with shelter operations, veterinary assistant experience and has extensive knowledge of veterinary medicine and comprehension of assisting medical team in the treatment of animals.

Job Responsibilities:

During Deployment:

  • Participate in responses to cruelty seizures and natural disasters and other emergency sheltering operations
  • Monitor the general health of shelter animals; ensure proper care and adherence to nutrition, sanitation, and infectious disease and all FIR established protocols
  • Supervise daily veterinary care of animals, working closely with the medical lead
  • Mandatory participation in Daily Medical Rounds with Medical team
  • Manage all aspects of volunteer sheltering teams; recruitment and scheduling pre deployment, leadership and supervision on site when the FIR Responder Manager is no longer on site
  • Partner with local veterinarians to ensure ongoing veterinary care of animals and adequate coverage at shelter
  • Maintain accurate and detailed records of animal inventory, medical and behavior status of animals and shelter staff activity. Provide daily reports to Medical Director and other department members
  • Serve as the primary contact to veterinarians, jurisdictional authorities and vendors when Field Department staff is no longer on site
  • Work with the Partnerships Manager to manage the export of released animals to partner organizations and facilitate medical requirements and documentation for transport

Administrative Support (Non-Deployment):

  • Research and develop new standards in sheltering and animal care, including advances in medical practices and state-to-state licensing guidelines
  • Obtain yearly continuing education credits to stay at the forefront of medical and sheltering practices
  • Maintain strict confidentiality when dealing with criminal cases
  • Oversee purchases and keep detailed records of expenses. Collaborate with Logistics Manager to ensure shelter supply needs are met
  • Assist in the development of sheltering and medical protocols and standard operating guidelines for temporary shelters
  • Recruit, train and maintain teams of volunteers to assist regional Directors with smaller operations
  • Collaborate with other ASPCA departments including Media, Community Outreach, Animal Health Services and others as needed
  • Promote department activities in a spokesperson capacity when appropriate.
  • Other duties as assigned

Education:

  • B.S or B.A degree
  • License or certification in Veterinary Technology desirable
  • Eligibility or willingness to seek certification in related forensic fields desirable

Experience:

  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to motivate team members
  • 3-5 years experience managing temporary or brick and mortar shelters required.
  • 3-5 years experience managing staff or volunteers required
  • 3-5 years of veterinary medical experience preferred.
  • Experience with horses and farm animals desirable.

Skills Requirements:

  • Animal handling and restraint
  • Administrative abilities to include Microsoft word, Excel and Powerpoint
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Excellent public speaking and workshop facilitation skills
  • Valid driver’s license
  • Ability to lift 40+ pounds
