Job Summary:

The Part-Time Spay/Neuter Surgeon is a trained and licensed part-time veterinarian primarily responsible for performing 25-35 surgeries per day in one of our high-quality, high-volume spay/neuter settings (a mobile surgical unit traveling throughout all five boroughs of New York City, or in a stationary facility, a MASH style event or an in-clinic clinic). This position works an approximately six-hour day with a small medical team of one LVT and one Senior Veterinary Assistant, providing high quality medical care to cats and dogs. Patients include owned pets belonging to financially underserved residents of NYC's five boroughs, homeless adoptable cats and dogs, and feral cats. Some animals may be very large and/or fractious. This veterinarian performs spays and neuters using standardized surgical techniques as put forth by ASPCA, Humane Alliance and NSNRT guidelines, performs physical exams on all patients to ensure their candidacy for surgery, and attends to all patients during recovery.

Job Responsibilities:

Perform spays and neuters and assist veterinary medical staff and other staff in the following:

  • Oversee all aspects of veterinary care on a clinic day including physical examination, surgery, pre- and post-operative care, anesthetic administration and monitoring, emergency care, restraint and treatment following all SOPs as put forth by ASPCA and OSHA.
  • Perform pre-surgery physical examinations on all surgical candidates
  • Perform an average of 25-35 high quality, high volume spay/neuter surgical procedures per part time schedule (approximately 5-7-minute cat spays and 12-15 minute dog spays) using techniques as defined in ASPCA surgical and anesthetic Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Diagnosis and treatment of post-surgical medical complications of outpatient animals.
  • Ability to work in a high volume, fast paced mobile clinic and facility practice setting located in various locations throughout all five boroughs of New York City.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff including LVTs, Senior Veterinary Assistants, and management.
  • Offer feedback on anesthesia protocols and other SOPs to Medical Director and Senior Director for discussion at DVM or all-staff meetings.
  • Customer service, effectively communicating with varied public including pet owners, animal rescuers, and shelter staff.
  • Follow written and verbally communicated ASPCA Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Attend staff meetings, doctor meeting and other requested meetings.
  • Provide services based on pre-scheduled clinic location and time. Provide training on ASPCA Standard Operating Procedure techniques internally and externally.
  • Obtain continuing education as required by ASPCA.
  • Provide medical information and representation to other departments of the ASPCA, to the public and to the media.

Education and Qualifications:

  • Current New York State Department of Education Veterinary License
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree or equivalent
  • Background in small animal medicine and surgery
  • Excellent work attendance record and interpersonal skills

Experience:

  • 2 years preferred
  • Internship preferred

Knowledge Requirements:

  • Bilingual English/Spanish fluency ideal
  • Interest in animal welfare and population control and serving indigent populations
  • Ability to maintain good working relationship with clients and staff, be a team player
